Brouwer is on the team, Colborne is not, hence the spot that Colborne may have taken if he accepted what the Flames offered is available and should probably go to an up and comer.
Can't say I'm surprised and really doesn't reflect well on Treliving that he was signed for 2 years at 2.5. That's two guys we had control over - Colborne and Byron we let go for nothing. And that's from someone who likes the Brouwer signing.
Whether Treliving has worked the phones or not, he has missed some windows and shown some misjudgment on a number of things. In the end I think we have a strong squad and it's hard to know how important these things are. It's not like Benning letting Hamhuis go for nothing but still don't like it.
How does this reflect bad on Trelviing? He could have had Colborne if he wanted to and we don't know if there was any team offering anything at the deadline.
Still early I guess but Ferland is a 4th liner no more. Frolik isn't he a rw? Tkatchuk and Shinkaruk still long shots for next season but yes anything is possible.
Ferland is a player coming off a rookie season who has 2nd/3rd line potential.
Frolik is a left shooting RW/LW.
Tkachuk is probably the most NHL ready prospect we've drafted in my 20 years of following the team/draft
Shinkaruk is a long shot, I agree

People are getting hung up on dollars and age. It doesn't matter whether we think this contract is value or not. Clearly the Fkames have decided Colborne is not someone that is going to be a player we want in our top 6, and weren't prepared to pay him to be a 3rd line player.
Brouwer in the other hand is some who they feel has characteristics we want on the team, and feel like he could be a top 6 player for us. Time will tell if they judged either player right, but no point keeping Joe around at any cost if you've decide he isn't what you need, regardless of cost.
That sucks. So we essentially tried to replace his offence by signing Brouwer.
One step back, one (expensive) step forward.
Except Brouwer brings strength and grit that Colborne wasn't. So the offense is maybe a wash but we get more physical and stronger and harder to play against
I do believe flames were trying to sign Colborne back, but they were also keeping their options open. Once Brouwer was signed there was no more money for Colborne. I would take Brouwer any day of the week over Colborne and i am one of the few that liked Colborne.
The one thing i got out of this signing, is that i don't think any of the players that i hoped could be traded from the flames, to make cap room, are tradeable.
