so he'll be spending next season in the AHL right?
that in and of itself is an advantage to the pick

All 3 Vegas 1st rounders didn't have their names on their jerseys. It just said "VEGAS".

Sharks had "SHARKS" for Josh Norris.

Predators and Blues did not have names at all for Tolvanen and Kostin.

jumping the gun a little bit..

He may be eligible for the AHL IF his Finnish club loaned him to the CHL, which isn't confirmed yet, but signs point that way.

Even if he was eligible, the Flames may not think being in the AHL is the best for his development right now. They still may send him back to Tri City.

well he was on the team last year, so unless he gets injured or has an extremely bad start to the season, he should be on this year's team

He could even end up captain.

He captained their U18 team a couple years ago.

Him having amazing English all ready should really help his leadership ability imo. Speaking English fluently and already playing NA hockey are big pluses in my eyes. Hes gonna get to learn from some great Dmen and his development won't be rushed. Gotta think this is the best place for him as most other teams around the Flames draft position would certainly trying rushing him into the pro's.

Lots of people are allauding the Leafs for their pick but I gotta feeling they are gonna rush Liljergen into a top 4 role where as Valimaki will be given time to understudy.

Little tidbit.

All Finnish children, starting in first grade, take conversational English or Swedish as a compulsory subject, through 12th grade.

Most take English and are fluent by the time they are teenagers.

Third grade I think.

Honestly conversational skills are often neglected in class rooms compared to reading and grammar, although I'm sure there are differences between schools, teachers, etc.

I'd say typically a young player has way better english skills than he sounds by his oral skills, he's just not used to talking in a foreign language. It takes some effort for a native finnish speaker to get their tongue around english pronunciation, and it's frustrating because you know the language so well but just can't naturally talk in it without practice.

So when people say that a prospect doesn't speak english, he still probably understands everything he hears. Players who move to NA to play junior will get used to it since they'll be in an english-speaking environment.

The Canucks picked Pettersson fifth overall. They supposedly liked him so much they took him out for dinner with the Sedins, and they still didn't bring a jersey with his name stitched on it.

Considering they knew they weren't getting Patrick or Hischier, they easily could have brought 3 jerseys with sewn-on name bars and been covered, but they didn't.

Bringing jerseys with the name bars sewn on isn't a huge accomplishment for the Flames, but the reason people take note of it is because most teams don't do it, especially those picking late in the first round.

Fair enough, I guess just as a Flames fan it's become such standard operating procedure each year but the media points it out like it's the first time, every time, lol.

I guess it's slightly better than the years where Jay Feaster would boast about it himself before the media even had a chance.

Wennberg looks like he should be modeling for Ralph Lauren in those photos.

On the subject, this article is just terrific: https://sports.yahoo.com/10-awkward-...154455909.html
