Initial gut reaction is that it feels like an overpayment.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Isn't this what he made last year? Unless CapFriendly is wrong.

It's his qualifier amount. It's too much as he isn't good but it's either this or let him walk. Because multi-year deal at any amount should not even be considered. About the only thing Benning has done correctly and still it sort of sucks.

Then let him walk, this guy is about as replaceable as you can get

You really think Benning was the one asking for one year of term?
I think this is Gudbranson trying to escape Vancouver.
Do you think the Canucks will get a 1st, 2nd, and 4th for him at the deadline to recoup their payment for him?

Another show me deal after a tough injury plagued season.
One more tough year and he will be taking a lot less.

Canucks' defence staying the same = fine by me.

Not exactly a vote of confidence from Benning and crew. When you can't get a Sbisa like deal from the muppet crew, you must really be doing something wrong.

It sounds like he just signed his qualifying offer. Don't think any negotiations actually took place.

Absolutely. That is my preference as well. But that was never in the cards. Canuck fans were hoping for the lesser of two evils (1 year vs multi-year) and this is it.

I think Gudbranson would be silly not to be asking for a multi-year deal given the quality of player he is (i.e. not great). I don't believe he was the one asking for a one-year deal. I also don't really think Benning was either. I think more likely it was similar to last year with Florida that there wasn't likely a ton of common ground for multi-year so they signed a one year deal.
I think the canucks will get very little for him. He isn't very good. It was a terrible trade.

Better than losing him for nothing I guess. Maybe becomes a pick at the deadline. He's not Wideman bad, is he?

Big tough defenceman who could probably play in the 4 spot. He could probably land the Canucks a 2nd round pick at the deadline, and maybe a late 1st if he has a good season.
Why would you let him walk?

Well the Cancuks were not terrible this year by accident. This signing helps ensure they keep the momentum they established last season.

I believe that he played on the second pair most of the year in Vancouver and he looked quite bad. Gudbranson might be an okay bottom pairing defenseman, but he ideally should not be playing any time in a team's top-four.

No, he is worse. At least Wideman has some offensive skills. Gudbranson is a pylon.

I imagine he gets moved at the deadline for a pretty good return if he's healthy.
He may be brutal, but he's a big body physical defender and his cap hit at the time of the deadline will be minor.
Good future trade chip.

He's pretty bad.
Top 4 on a lottery team maybe.

Gudbranson was top 4 on a 103 point division winner just 2 seasons ago.
