So the general feeling is that people didn't like this season? Maybe I missed too many episodes (admittedly haven't seen them all), but the Jimmy Fallon and Maya Rudolph shows were two of the funniest episodes I've seen in years of any show out there.

I really liked both of the episodes that you mentioned because it brought together a lot of alumni. I thought the show's highest point of the season was the Melissa McCarthy episode. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life.
There were a lot of stinkers though...

Man I love that show and the one in the second year. There was just some classic comedy in both of those.

Wiig was great as the crazy Dr. Pat on Joe Schmo.

Wiig is a generational talent. The last act was very moving.

That's not exactly how it works.
The biggest problem with the format IMO, is they write all the skits on a Tuesday, pitch them Wednesday, fine tune them until Saturday. They don't do any writing on weeks where there is no show, or in the off-season. Seems to me they could have more hits, if they weren't pressured to come up with material in a few days. I know they have to be topical, but they should do much more writing year round.
Lorne has created a very competitive environment. Not very collaborative. Tina Fey was explaining the difference between SNL and 30 Rock on a recent Nerdist podcast.

I think SNL could benefit from more loosely written scripts. These guys are trained up through theater like Second City, and can be hilarious in the moment when they're straight up improvising. I think, unless you've got a really cohesive group (like KITH for example) it's a good idea to let the talent flow as much and as naturally as possible.
Assuming the talent is there of course.

The problem with that is that they put the host in so many sketches, and most of the hosts are horrible even with every word written on cue cards. Expecting them to improv would be a disaster.

There definitely should be collaboration between writers though as Trout suggested. I think SNL is becoming less and less relevant because the things they should be doing well (such as current events parodies) are being done better (such as the you tube community).
I know when I watch the show I find myself being overly critical (missing important details or opportunities).

Is there anywhere to watch it online as a candian resident. Global.com says they have full episodes, but I couldn't find the ending on there.

That is a flaw with their system, no doubt.
They should really limit the host to two (three max) sketches, and eliminate the ones that simply pander to their celebrity.

Unfortunately, Global doesn't seem to have the rights to post the musical performances and Jagger sang Ruby Tuesday during the final sketch, so you'll probably have to find a crappy quality upload on YouTube.

A cohesive team can write to each other's strengths, penning in characters with an idea of who will play them, and how. And there's tons of value in bouncing ideas back and forth with others.
I think you've got to go one way or the other: cohesive creative team, or loosely plotted improv.
Personally, I've always loved improv because it's like watching genius at work. Assuming they've got the ability to pull it off, of course. But most great comic actors do, because it's how they cut their teeth in the first place.

Does anyone know where I can find Lazy Sunday 2 online and which might be accessible from the UK? I thought it was great and would like to show it to my fiancee before she goes to NYC on Thursday. Especially since she likes the Sister Act musical.
