The Deadwood movie is predictably in limbo. He apparently started the script, but nothing finished yet. Been more than a year since it was announced as being on again.

S2 was decent, but relative to S1 it was a disappointment. S1 was one of the best seasons of any TV series ever, so the bar was set quite high. Hopefully the show's makers have learned their lesson with S3.
It would be interesting to see Mahershala Ali get a little bit of variance in his role. It doesn't necessarily appear that that's going to be the case here.
I didn't watch season 2 because of the poor reviews. Should I give it a try? Is it really that bad?
It's not really bad but it's also not great at a time where there are a lot of really good television series options vying for your time. A lot of people didn't like some of the actors cast so in some people's eyes it was a failure at delivery which is why some of the reviews are worse than it really deserved. If you don't like Vince Vaugh, Collin Farrell, or both then don't bother watching as your preconceived negatives will always get in the way of you enjoying it.

Huh I actually kinda liked it. Where season one started with a bang but got progressively less interesting I felt like season two was the opposite. Didn’t start as strongly as it could have but got progressively better. Plus there was the robot dick line and that was funny.
Vince Vaughn was terrible in season 2 and I don't even really mind Vince Vaughn. His little monologue while he was lying in bed, oh man. I can't recall which episode or find a clip, but I can recall that it was laughably bad.
It was like all they assumed people liked the show for was its edginess and decided to ramp it up to 11 like the saturation on bad HDR.
The bar for me will be Season 2. If it's better than Season 2 it will be a success. I will watch for sure.
Season 1 is a top 5 all time series season without a doubt. Maybe even #1. It was incredible in every way.

I quite liked the modern L.A noir vibe from S2. Rachel McAdams was great, Colin ferrel was great, The seedy undertone was amazing IMO. And how Vince Vaughns campy character was there to keep it just a tad off kilter.
But yes, S1 set the bar so freaking high S2 was pretty much doomed from the start. How can anything compete with Harrelson and Mcconaughy in a Nawlins setting?
Not to mention one of the finest single shot takes ever made.
