I'd use snap traps with peanut butter. If you want to poison them, use the peanut butter warfarine pellets. Side story, our old dog ate an entire box of that poison, my mom had to give him a shot of Vitamin K to balance out the blood thinner but he survived for another 5 years.

What is the best way to trap them put it by the holes? I don't understand why they are under there since it says they eat roots. All that is under my deck is dirt I don't have a garden or any schrubs back there

Get yourself some snakes to prey on the voles. After the voles are gone, you'll have an excess of snakes so bring in some gorillas. The gorillas will take care of the snakes. Then all you have to do is wait until winter kills off the gorillas.

Voles have torn up my lawn as well. From what it seems they've been living under some snow drifts in my backyard. I've read that once the snow melts they should go away. Doesn't help you much but I'm wondering if it might be worthwhile to get a cat from a friend or something and have them catch the voles?

Yeah we have a bit of an issue with them as well...but I had a buddy round up some black snakes and let em loose around the area and i suspect this problem will be solved shortly.
more recently, and for the frst time since we have been here, we are getting possum damage around the house. Those damn things are so frickin noisy at night....hate em.

If you have dogs that dwell in the same proximity, they should go away now that the snow has gone.
however, if they're still lingering, i've heard they are harder to trap (live or snap) than mice. you could try and bait their paths for a few days then set the trap up and see what catches.

They aren't tearing up my yard at all just a couple small holes leading under the deck. They just annoy my 2 dogs who sit there barking at them and my neighbor's dog has started ripping up their yard to try and get at them though. I would assume they would pack up and leave to go somewhere else that actually has some yummy roots for them to eat and not just dirt and grass like my yard

Weasels are another option.
For poison, best bet is these rat poison blocks:

I have them in my front yard as well under the cement walkway. There's two holes on either side and a well worn little path leading up to them.
I stuck my garden hose in one of them for half an hour or so.
They were getting into the house this winter as well along with some mice. I spent a full week tearing the basement apart plugging cracks and holes as well as cleaning pee and poo and replacing insulation and vapour barrier. I ####ing hate rodents.

I meant get a weasel to eat the voles... just a stupid suggestion along the snakes line.
We have both mice and voles in our yard and garage as I have caught/killed both. Voles have short tails and smaller ears.

How do I get rid of these things since they are probably under there making little vole babies? I have 2 dogs so I don't want to use any poison that they could get at. The deck is closed off so if I take some deck boards up and did some mass poison that way the dogs shouldn't get into it.
What kind of poison do you use to kill them?
I need help cp!!!!

Poison won't work. You have to nuke them from orbit. Its the only way to be sure.

The gophers I used to have under my deck were not too fond of me shooting bottle rockets down their holes. The trick was to plug up some of the other escape holes so the smoke would linger a little longer.

Get rid of your 'lay around all day and contribute nothing to society' dogs and get a few 'blood-thirsty remorseless killing-machine' cats.
