It closed just last year. Their official reason was that the area was already well served by other Walmart's, which I guess is true. 130th, Deerfoot Meadows and Southland all like 10 minutes away.

But I also heard they were having issues with renovating that location into a supercentre. It was pretty small, felt like a small town Walmart

I think it probably also had to do with the fact that the location was too small to make it into a super centre, so no grocery department.

It sucks that the location closed, there seemed to be less skidders per capita than any other Walmart in the city. Most people didn't even have holes in their sweatpants.

I loved it when I lived in Douglasdale because Deerfoot Meadows and 130th were always way too busy, and Deer Run was just as close

There have been rumors for a few years now about a bunch of retail going into the Walmart location...

And that the Timmys was coming back. problem is that someone has to clean up the mess left behind by the old gas station that was there.

nd because both of those places were designed by some idiot.

Deerfoot meadows and 130th are traffic hell.

I've never had an issue with Deerfoot Meadows, aside from Ikea sometimes causing a mess. It's nowhere close to the absolute ####show that Beacon Hill is

Nice food and excellent customer service, make it worth fighting your way in.

How long was the Walmart in Deer Ridge anyway? Did Target take it over from Zellers or was that when Walmart moved in?

I’m pretty sure Walmart moved in after Target went under.

Found this: In 2011, Walmart took over the lease on 39 Zellers locations that Target didn't want.

Deer Valley was the only one in Calgary: https://corporate.walmart.com/newsro...-for-39-stores

The conversion of the stores to Walmart was expected to be completed in late-2012. If it closed in 2020, it didn't even last a decade there.

But if Target had kept it, it wouldn't have lasted a quarter decade

Development partner chosen for new hotel at Stampede Park: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...sion-1.6675879

Quote:
The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) announced plans Tuesday for the construction of a hotel at the north entrance to Stampede Park, close to the expanded BMO Centre.

The hotel will be built on a 31,000-square-foot lot at the southwest corner of Stampede Trail and 12th Avenue S.E., said CMLC president and CEO Kate Thompson in a release.

She said it will be built under a development agreement with the Calgary Stampede and Matthews Southwest Hospitality.
This is the empty lot east of the Casino and will be across 4th St from the NW corner of the new arena.

Just want to point out that Matthews Southwest is the same developer as The Bow… the same developer that welched on their commitment to rebuild the south block and has left the city with a barren plaza, instead of the promised, restored York hotel.
