Default 142 year-old Mcdougall church destroyed in blaze (Near Morley)

http://calgaryherald.com/news/crime/...rch-burns-down

Quote:
It has been a long-standing symbol of Morleyville, the first pioneer settlement in Alberta. It also includes the archaeological remains of mission structures at the site.

In 1979 it was designated as a historic site by the United Church of Canada and the Alberta government.

Crap. I'm going to assume a deliberately set fire.

So sad.......

"The church had architectural significance as the first carpenter’s gothic-style building still standing in Alberta on its original site."

Just curious, what language is it on the sign beneath the "Memorial United Church" line?

So are all those people who "can't wait for religion to be extinct" going to be happy about this?

Yes, because on top of being an atheist I also hate historic buildings and generally take the side of arsonists/firebugs/terribly unfortunate accidental fires.

Well Norwegian black metal bands in the 90s for one.

All jokes aside, it's brutal to see such a historic building go down this way. I always had fantasies of going out there and snapping photos of it around sunset, guess that's a not go now.

Drove by it Sunday afternoon on my way back from Canmore. Almost stopped in as I always drive by it and never get out. Wish I has of now.

You may be right but a 'conscience' is just the result of a mass-enforced social contract that we as individuals never consented to or ratified which makes it a form of mental oppression.

Fight the power man. Fight the power.

Looks like fire was accidental

"Cochrane RCMP have released a statement stating the Fire Investigator could not find any reason to believe the fire was intentionally caused, and believes the likely cause was accidental."

Well, as they like to say, everything happens for a reason. Maybe God hates churches? Or just this one...
