Default WTB- Road Bike

I just started cycling to work and it has come to my attention that I should be looking at upgrading from my monstrosity of a mountain bike. Hoping somebody has something used that they might be looking at selling.

I'm 5' 10" and 220 pounds, in case that matters for bike sizing. I was hoping to keep it under $300, but if there's a great deal for a little more, I might be able to swing it. Current commute is about 20 km each way, but that's from a friend's house. Eventually I'd like to start riding from home, which would bring it over 30 km.

I'm also open to constructive criticism in this thread about my bike expectations.

So far I've been considering this bike:

I am also aware of the bike swap this weekend, however that conflicts with Beerfest.

I can't in good conscience recommend a Supercycle. They're garbage bikes, shop around on kjiji or other used bike places. You want a nicer ride if you're going to go 20 or 30 each way.

Do you know anyone that works at sport check? My son does and we were able to get a great discount on a GT flatbar road bike for my dad. Specs were good, aluminium, disk brakes, 32mm tires and Shimano alivio drivetrain, $350 Inc tax.

The build was not as good as a bike shop, but I wrenched at a shop for 4 years in the 90s and could correct their mistakes.

You get decent after sale support and a solid warranty too.

If you are planning on riding that much I would look for a decent 2nd hand bike.

If you go the new anything that will last you would be looking at close to $1000. $1500+ with disc/105 components.

pinkbike.com would be a place to check as well for used bikes.

You are likely a 56cm frame or Large.

Cyclocross bikes make for decent commuter bikes if you are set on the road bike style.

A used bike is going to be your best bet. Then take it to a bike shop for a good tuning. You should post in the Cycling Thread too. Someone there might be able to point you in the direction of a bike: http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=106340

See, I post in the cycling thread and nobody replies.

I had set an absolute max budget of $400, but found one just over that price that seems to fit the bill. Hoping to get some feedback from you guys:

Devinci will be lightyears ahead of anything you get from Canadian Tire, if their mountain bikes are any indication. Solid Canadian brand absolutely killing the price points of their competitors from what I've seen.
