Default Cross Border Car Rentals

I am looking at renting a car one way across the border. Plan is to pick up the car in Calgary and drop it off either in New York or somewhere in Pennsylvania.

Anyone has any experience with doing this? Which companies offer this as being an option? Costs? Suggestions?

Looking at some websites of rental car companies they do not allow choosing a separate country for drop-off when doing one way rental.

Thank you in advance

No clue about the one-way factor, but for two-way, I've only been able to find them from the Enterprise Airport location. If you rent from a non-airport location they have a mileage limit and are not allowed out of the province I believe.

i too thought there were issues taking them across the US/Can border.

Seems like an expensive way to travel.

just try booking one online. will give you price without having to confirm. I would use a company that is established in both countries though

My Cousin looked at this last year, and it would've cost them a fortune, like $8000 or somethihg like that. They said that the vehicle would have to be returned to the country of origin for insurance reasons and that the one renting the car would have to pay for it. Look at renting it out of Great Falls MT as opposed to Calgary.

Have car rental rules changed that much? 5 years ago and 4 years ago I rented cars for two separate trips to California, unlimited kms. Wait, I also rented an SUV last year and drove to Seattle, unlimited kms also.

My main reasoning is I wanted to do a roadtrip to New York but don't have enough time to be driving both ways. Was thinking of driving in and flying back. Would dropping the car off in Niagara Falls work?

A few years ago, I rented a car in Vancouver, drove to the USA and then back to Vancouver. Checked with the rental company first and they were fine with it. Can't speak to renting in Canada and leaving it in the USA.

Return trips are always much simpler. Besides U-hauls, has anyone ever rented a car with plates from a different province/state than you are picking it up in? I've never seen it. Getting those things back home is $$$

I had that once- picked up a car from Budget (I think) on MacLeod- all the cars had BC plates. You are correct that it is odd; I got pulled over for speeding and the RCMP officer said he had never seen that before.

I'm not sure how the cross-border plan would work, but I know that dropping off a vehicle at an agency different from where you rented is prohibitively expensive. A friend was planning on renting in Seattle, and dropping off in Billings, it was going to be $378 per day!

According to the Hertz website, I see SEA to YYC would be less, but $200 per day is nothing to sneeze at.

The issue is that most agencies are individually owned, and the vehicle, which is the property of that franchise, will eventually have to be returned to their inventory. They make the costs that high so people are dissuaded from doing exactly what he planned to do. Getting the car back is a huge hassle for them.

I can't speak for every company out there, as I know Enterprise has unique rules, but I think you'll find this is true for many.

I just rented a car from Bay st Budget in Toronto. Picking it up at 8am and dropping it off at 8 pm in Philadelphia. I called budget to make sure this was allowed and no extra charges would surprise me later. I was told it is allowed and that my online quote of 128 canadian $ would be the only charges unless the car is damaged.

Are you serious? I rent a lot of cars and I've called each company at least twice asking them if it's possible and they said no. Must return to country of origin.

I don't think you can even do that between provinces.
We looked into pick up in AB and leaving in BC and it was crazy expensive to couldn't be done.
Couldn't see how this would work.
try hitchhiking, that would be fun.

I had a situation a couple of months ago. I was at the airport in Spokane and tried multiple rental desks to see if I could rent a car and leave it in Calgary. Not a chance. Enterprise mentioned something about being a franchise and not having the authorization to do that, but mentioned calling head office if I wanted to try that way. Hertz wouldn't do it. Avis checked on their system and didn't have any available cars (indicating that maybe it is an option sometimes?)

I ended up getting a California licensed truck from Enterprise, driving from WA and leaving in Montana. Cost about $200-300 for the day I believe.

It happens though; years ago I rented a car here in Calgary from I think Hertz, and dropped it off in Vancouver when I got there. Wasn't an issue, aside from costing more money (not prohibitively more, maybe an extra $50). Probably more if it was the USA, though.

I would try calling another budget location or their 1-800 number to confirm this is allowed, and I would get something in writing - otherwise you could be in for a surprise.
