I had a quick comment about this after Rob and I chatted about this morning

What about preventing new GMs from trading their 1st round pick (or 1st and 2nd) until they've gone through one draft with their picks?

This would help protect new GMs from the hoarding that happens every off season and push veteran GMs to talk to other veteran GMs to fix cap issues.

Another thought we had was to put a cap on the number of first round picks a team can have. Not sure if this one is really workable, but it was another thought.

Food for thought since we are on the topic.

I do not think we should restrict trading like that though. Perhaps just make it so that all picks traded by new GMs have a lottery protection condition placed on them.

Those special conditions or futures can really hurt an organization in rough shape.

I have one now with the Rangers. I owe, coincidentally the Wild, a 2nd round pick, 45 or higher. Now I have that asset and can send it over and I will meet the requirement but in my opinion, if you are making a trade and don't have the asset, we shouldn't be able to put a condition on it. If the previous GM or the one before him didn't have a 2nd, we shouldn't be able to condition that pick. You either have the asset to move or you don't. Just my thought.

I love conditions personally...gives more flexibility to a deal. But a person has to be careful using them.
