A few points worth making:
1) The signing reduces Chia's margin for error. Less cap space to make mistakes and more players to make mistakes with.
2) Cap growth has slowed to ~2-3% annually, so the contract will look better over time, but not that much better. On the last year of the deal, the cap is probably US$85m or so.
3) At the end of the day, the key is going to be scouting and player development, and as a playoff team, the oilers will have to project and develop well. They have shown little ability to do this over the past 20 years.
So, did the oilers do good today? Sure - they locked up their franchise player for the next 9 years. But this is a team that now has little margin for error in terms of RFA and UFA signings, and is going to have to organically develop players internally to have any chance of playoff success. They have shown no ability to do this in the past. And there is no reason to think that they are going to have better luck in the future.
For example, take Chicago - they had Keith, Toews, Kane, Seabrook and Hossa. But do this win they cup without supporting players like Sharp, Versteeg, Saad, Brouwer, Barker, Byfuglien, Campbell, Hjalmarsson, Bolland, Ladd. Quite frankly, they do not.
This is why Edmonton is no good. This is the reason they need top 5 picks to be competitive. And this is why they wont win cups. The organization is a joke. McDavid and Draisaitl and Talbot might make the team look respectable, but its the foundation is still a joke.

Surprised they didn't try to get it to 12.125 for 8 years. Or 97M. Jersey number special.
That is a lot of coin for one player, but if there is a player to give that much, it is McDavid for his whole prime years.
However, they won't win anything until they can get more guys on ELCs contributing. Since Chiarelli likes throwing money after UFA contracts, hopefully this keeps Edmonton in a state of "nearly there" but not able to get enough together for a cup

He played himself. I guess he does value winning over cash because he could have sewered them for every red cent.

What a beauty this kid is.
Things will be pretty tight the first few years, but this contract will really pay big dividends towards the end of the term.

I am trying to understand where the increase in the cap is going to come from
They signed a 2 billion dollar 10 year deal with NBC that started in 2012. This money helped soften the revenue loss that came with the work stoppage in 2011-2012, but that revenue is baked in and will not increase until 2022 at the earliest
Then a couple years later Rogers announced their 12 year deal that started in 14-15 and runs through 25-26. Again that money is locked in and while the value increases by about 200 million with gradual annual increases over the last 10 years, the increases are only around 20 million a year, which means there is not much money for the increase in that deal.
But they did double the value overnight of the Canadian TV deal, which accounted for the original large increase in the cap in 14-15.
I could see the cap slowing down and basically maybe going up 2 million a year on average for the life of this deal. I think the days of large 5-8 percent increases year over year are over now.
I would be shocked if the cap is worth more than 90 million by the end of this deal.

Thats a good deal for the Oilers. 12.5 was the lowest he could credibly sign for

I cant wait for the Draisaitl announcement.
Even if he makes (IMO a very reasonable) $7.5M, thats $20M for 2 players.
Just as an exercise.
McDavid/Draisaitl: $20M - 0 Cups
Crosby/Malkin: $18.2M - 3 Cups
Toews/Kane: $21M - 3 Cups
Oh yeah....thats a great deal.

I tend to agree. The Oilers have a poor track record of drafting and developing players, including first overall picks. And I'm not sure if they have much in the pipeline. But what if McDavid was Flames' property? Would we be in a better position to absorb that contract and ice a long-term competitive team with our current roster of players, and prospects? (Assume for the sake of argument that we won the 2015 draft lottery, kept our pick, and as a result, didn't trade for Dougie).

McJebus and Bob Nicholson are trump orange. I´m guessing that didn´t happen spending time in Redmonton´s gorgeous river valley.
McDavid needs a personality stat. Can he show any happens, enthusiasm or emotion?

Their pipeline is terrible, if JP wasn't there it would be pretty close to the bottom of the league. Why do you think they signed half of the AHL.
Keegan Lowe is a injury or two from taking a regular shift on Daddy's blueline.

I think every team in the league would take McDavid on that contract, notwithstanding what is being run in this thread.

Puljujarvi will be a massive wildcard. Everyone is forgetting he is still to come. We all wanted this kid at the draft. He could step in and immediately be a huge contributor

The point is that you're typically supposed to win before you get paid.

McDeity's contract is fine. if you have that kind of money laid out though, it behooves you to make sure all the rest of your cap space is being spent efficiently. that's where the Oil have screwed themselves and that's why it's worth discussing. generational player on a fair contract, the team is still no good.

The fun part would be to find out what the roster looked like when that quote first came out.

Sadly this is a win for the Oilers, this easily could have been a $14M x 5 or 6 year deal.
Hopefully they saved to money to make a awful deal with the side kick.

If 12.5 for 97 is reasonable and and 7.5 for 29 is very reasonable, what are you getting at? That they didn't win the cup in their first full year together (before the contracts even kicked in?)
What would you or the wizard (BT) do?

I thought their plan was to win 5 cups in the next 3 years. It is Edmonton after all.

What a little weakling to roll over for them like that. He had all the leverage in the world. Should've taken those losers for all their money. That said, 12.5 is still a huge cap hit.
Hopefully Draisaitl's camp is more firm. I think he will be.
