Default Flames have an overage penalty against their cap for 16/17

From cap friendly

The Calgary #Flames have any overage penalty of $630,500 against their salary cap for 2016-17, with 7 players hitting bonuses last season.

https://www.capfriendly.com/articles...-buyout-update

Shane o Briens buyout was not a compliance buyout apparently

Why on earth wasn't it a compliance buyout?

Matter of principle (dumb)?
Administrative error (dumb)?

Not the type of personality you want during a rebuild.

Notorious partier, difficult to coach, unwilling to buy in.

Addition by subtraction.

Blame feaster for trading for a player the next management team was forced to buyout.

That makes no sense though, why not a Compliance Buyout? There was no reason to have it as a Normal Buyout, and why are we only hearing about this 2 years after the fact?

So Gaudreau has to take less than 8m this season no matter what.

Or blame Treliving for not using a compliance buy-out? That's a huge dropped ball.

That wasn't his question.

His question is why not use a compliance buyout instead of a regular buyout. Each team had 2 compliance buyouts they could use before the 2014-2015 season. The Flames didn't use any apparently.

You may not have heard it about it but I did.

The reason it wasn't a compliance buyout is the Flames wanted to use one on a much larger salary such as Ribeiro or Cam Ward, but ultimately couldn't make either of those deals work (ribeiro used his no trade, forcing the yotes to buy him out instead of the flames).

At the time, his salary didn't matter for buyout purposes as the flames were well below the cap ceiling, and arguably it still doesn't matter because the guy was awful and it was worth buying him out instead of playing him or having him around the organization, even in the minors.

Here was the original thread (I believe) -- some discussion about Flames hitting the cap floor in 2014/15? http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=138147

EDIT: I'm getting my years mixed up -- Dougie was acquired last year, not 2014 when SOB was bought out.

They had 2 compliance buyouts. Couldn't they have just waited to see what happened with Ribeiro or Ward before making a short sighted move that would impact the team's ability in the future?

People on Twitter are saying this leaves the Flames $7.85 million in cap space for this year. So the Flames have to get Gaudreau well below that number to give them any flexibility during the year (injuries, trades, etc.).

The Ribeiro and Ward trades fell through at the draft. They both reportedly needed each teams respective 1st round picks to work, so doubtful they could be revisited after the draft without major reworking the deal.

SOB was bought out after the draft. Don't think that line of thinking works.

sureloss will likely swoop in with a timeline here but generally there is a buyout window initiated or extended by the rfa negotations window (i think, something like that).

At the time, the flames likely had to weigh missing an opportunity to add a significant asset (at the time a top 5 or top 10 pick) against having O'Brien being on the roster.

The move wasn't short sighted, it benefited the team long term to not have a proven lockerroom distraction influence their young and impressionable pros.

The Flames have to get him significantly under that number period.

In which case a Smid on LTIR could give them a bit more breathing space in terms of flexibility.

Doesn't the Smid situation give us more cap room?

Buying him out was the right move. Not using a compliance buyout was not. The future is uncertain, you don't know what the cap needs will be a few years down the road. That was the short sighted part.

Which players had bonus eligible deals last season? Seven hitting bonus targets seems high.
