That depends on the standards. If you wan walk through the domestic league then obviously the standards for the CL are going to be higher.

They could have had the same run (or better) with me in charge. The CL was the whole point.

as always in late July, there's lots of interesting friendlies coming up as part of the International Champions Cup. Manchester United v Borussia Dortmund is starting in an hour, plus loads of other European top teams are in action in the coming days (Barcelona, Real, Atletico, Juventus, Bayern, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Leicester, Tottenham, Paris, Inter, Milan).

Preseason sure, but pretty slick nonetheless.

not a good game ... pitch was a disaster and the weather didn't help. Both teams were quite poor I thought, though it was obvious that Dortmund played their 5th game of the preseason while it was only the 2nd for United. First goal was poor from Johnstone, second one a harsh penalty after a Valencia handball. Dembele and Castro with two strikes of genius in the second half. Good for Mkhitaryan to score against his former team and good for Shaw to complete a full 90 minutes.

Jones and Rojo were a total disaster at centre back. Bailly was good.

Didn't see it mentioned, but in their return leg, Celtic beat the Red Imps 3-0 (3-1 Agg), to move on.

Had to look this one up. There's a second, younger Moussa Dembele on Celtic.

Heart skipped a beat for you, Diane.

seems like Juventus are indeed buying Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli ... for €94m. Yes, you've read that right - that's his buyout clause. Second most expensive transfer of all time for now (since the Pogba deal still isn't official yet).

Sometimes I just shake my head at the way big clubs do business. I can readily admit when Europeans do things better than N Americans (no tipping, relegation) but one they they suck at is parity and equality among clubs.

It's the paradox of American/European sports. America, home of capitalism, has it with most of its major sports being pure socialism, salary caps and revenue sharing and drafts. Europe, home to socialism, has basically pure capitalism with sports, money always wins and there are no rules to stop the big clubs from dominating.

American sports is a monopoly. Parity within the league and the league doesn't have to play other leagues. It's just playing with yourself.

In soccer if you have parity in your own league, that champion isn't going to beat anyone.

It's too bad. But good for him for recognizing the end is near and hanging them up before some shameful attempt at hanging on. I hate when a classy player nears the end and clings on and blames others.

All the best Basti.

Fair enough. Time to hang them up. Hes often-injured and hes given everything to the German National team and you can tell the years and the games have worn him down.

Time to get healthy and enjoy your life. I like to think I'd like that, leave a top country and club and go play somewhere fun.

Sure. If you want to get stabbed or shot.

I was thinking more like Greece or something. Play, get paid (hopefully) and chill out on luxurious beaches with your wife.
