I disagree. I like Hathaway as much as anyone but he isn't nearly as good as Versteeg. He scored at a top-6 clip last year, and is essentially the perfect middle-six winger.

The Flames have three spots up for grabs up front: 1RW, 3LW, and 4RW. Monahan, Backlund, Bennett, and Jankowski are the centres, with Stajan able to step in if Janko falters and slot in at the 13th forward if not. Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and Lazar are the left wingers... Bouma goes to the AHL. Frolik, Brouwer, and Ferland are the right wingers.

Maybe Hathaway grabs the 4RW spot but I think Stajan does first. He's not going to play on the third line with Bennett, though... he needs a finesse guy like Versteeg to feed him the puck.

Not surprising about Culkin and Morrison. Sucks that Culkin probably would have been called up if he hadn't been injured two years ago.

Kind of surprising about Spoon, but I think he still has value.
Spoon might end up the 7th defenceman.

Not surprised they don't want arbitration. It's something I've always found weird anyway ... "We want to sign the player, and here's why he sucks!"

Although some of those arbitration stories are undoubtedly funny. "BRENDAN MORRISON IS DA MOUSE!!!"

In that scenario, I'd say Andersson has the inside track for one spot. One of Wotherspoon or Kulak for the other.

Wotherspoon/Kulak sort of have a Commodore/Montador vibe to 'em.

Hopefully Andersson takes his training regimen very seriously this summer.

It is always interesting to look at this list after seeing which RFAs get let go.

I think he got that message and will stick to the program.

I'd prefer Andersson play at least one more year in the AHL.

He's only played one season of pro hockey, no sense in rushing him. Obviously if he absolutely tears it up during training camp/pre-season then they will give him a spot and waive/trade one of Wotherspoon/Kulak. I just think another year in the AHL would be ideal.

On defense, I am hoping for:

Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Hamonic
Kulak - Stone
Wotherspoon

I'm surprised they're bringing back Wotherspoon and Vey to be honest. I don't see a future for either guy on the team but I guess they don't see anyone else taking their spot in the AHL this year.

On Chiasson, the guy put up 12 goals and 24 points for less than $1mil. Don't know how much more you can ask of a guy making that salary. I want him back and I don't understand the constant hate for him. As long as they keep him on the 4th line he's an excellent depth guy.

Stone is a RHD and Kulak is a LHD. Not sure why you've switched them around

Frank Seravalli @frank_seravalli
#Flames did not qualify Alex Chiasson, another RFA who has arbitration rights. Likely to be re-signed, but UFA on Sat. if not.

Yup, Chiasson performed well on that deal, I'd be surprised if he wasn't brought back. Just keep him away from top 6 minutes.

I'd imagine that, with Chiasson back, Hathaway will be the first call-up, then. I'd bet the lineup will likely shape up like this:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland/UFA
Frolik - Backlund - Brouwer
Tkachuk - Bennett - Versteeg
Lazar - Jankowski - Chiasson
Stajan

Lazar shoots right, so I would expect him to play RW no?

I suppose, maybe then the bottom-6 shapes out like this:

Tkachuk - Bennett - Lazar
Versteeg - Jankowski - Chiasson
Stajan
