Training camp opens Sept 14th. Even if the Flames wait until Sept 12th or 13th to announce a deal with Bennett, I am good with that. We just need to be patient, it will happen.

Did not think of that.
I guess the deal could use some restructuring to avoid that, however, I still think getting him for 3yrs @ $3.5M would be fantastic for this team.

I agree it is a good deal. I actually think that is what the Flames will have to do to get Bennett to sign that kind of deal. Makes sure that he either gets paid, or will get a fresh start somewhere else.

But the Flames cant just let him walk for nothing come year 3, so what I am hoping is that the sticking point right now is more about term than anything.
If its a short term (3 years) contract, hopefully it doesn't come with a NTC or NMC. If its a deal longer than 5 (unlikely..?) than a NMC or NTC is more likely..?

There is virtually no chance of this happening since Bennett will still be a RFA in 2020.

I'm reasonably sure you can't do a NMC with a player as young as Bennett - if it was, it'd be a NMC in the 3rd year of the deal. Wasn't Dion's structured that way?
Regardless, Sam Bennett has no case to hold out. He'll be at camp.

I was thinking he would no longer be an RFA near the end of his deal.
Well, if nothing to worry about because it cant happen.. then no worries and thanks for the enlightenment.

This is true but the deal could just as easily be structured 3.25, 3.5, 3.75. Result is he still gets overpayed to get the 3rd year.
You can throw these on the table and tell him to pick one.
Edit: no 1 year
2x2.5ish aav
3x3.5ish aav (overpayment to get the 3rd year)
Unless they can work out a long term deal which I just can't see.
I'm sure it will get figured out here. It doesn't make sense on either side to let this go into training camp.

If he plays with Jagr, no reason Bennett can't do that.
Johnny/Sean/Ferland
3M
Versteeg/Bennett/Jagr
Lazar/Jankowski/Brouwer

Eh, that is such a lofty and unrealistic expectation. Not just for Bennett but for anybody to play behind Monahan AND Backlund. Here're all the 52+ point centers in the league in the past three seasons who also played 3rd-most minutes among centers on their team:
Jack Eichel 2016-17 - and that's with Sam Reinhart listed as a center when he's a winger
Pavel Datsyuk 2014-15 - with Riley Sheahan posting 36 points as the more true "3C"
Jason Spezza 2015-16 - with Cody Eakin posting 35 points as the more true "3C"
Tyler Bozak 2016-17 - Centered James Van Riemsdyk and Mitch Marner
Logan Couture - Only technically, because Pavelski is listed as a center when he plays RW
Nathan MacKinnon 2015-16 playing on Power Play unit 1 (16 PP Points)
Impossible? No but it's setting yourself up for disappointment.

You're right.
With a significant injury to Monahan or Backlund, Bennett should get 50 points. If he's stuck on the 3rd line all year, a 20/20 campaign is probably more realistic.

First line, second line, third line.. all that doesn't matter too much as GG will role his lines at even strength. So not too worried if Bennett is on the "third line". What is important is seeing his minute per game on the PP expanded.
Sam and Dougie Hamilton are two guys I'd love to see with expanded roles on the powerplay. Hamilton needs to lead our D, not Brodie and even ahead of Gio. Bennett should hopefully take time away from Versteeg and Brouwer and move into that 2-2:30 minute per game mark.

The Leafs just signed Connor Brown to a three year extension with an AAV of $2.1MM - and while Brown may not be a better player than Bennett long term, he did have 36 points to Bennett's 26 points last season. To me this creates the ballpark for a Bennett 2-3 year deal with an AAV of between $2MM and $2.5MM. I would love to see a three year deal, but Bennett's camp is more likely to accede to a 2 year deal.

After it's all said and done I'm sure that Sam will get a new Audi regardless of his AAV.

Yup, if Bennett doesn't get the ice time, he simply won't get the numbers and it'll hard for him to make a case for getting more ice time than Backlund or Monahan. So unless he's on one of those lines, 40 points should be considered the high mark.
