I've been starting to go on longer runs (for me at least), and I'm finding I'm very susceptible to calf cramps near the end of the run or even once I'm done and back at home (example, went for a run, came back home and was watching TV, then I get up and run up the stairs and I suddenly get a cramp).
Any advice? I've been trying to drink more water, but that doesn't seem to help. Someone told me a packet of mustard works wonders, but I couldn't tell if he was kidding or not.

Do you stretch? I find that makes a big difference for me.

I find I get really close to having calf cramps in one leg at the beginning of a run, and I have to adjust my gait a little bit to prevent it from going proceeding into a full-on cramp. After a while everything is fine. I guess I should stretch more, too. That is one thing I have been really bad at doing before runs.
This heat though sucks, I barely see anybody out and I have taken some time off because I seem to have no endurance in 28+ weather. I eat, drink a lot of water before heading out, and I still hit a wall.

Inside a fireproof lockbox. But it has a key. Which I buried in the backyard. But, I put a treasure map to the location in the keycode lockbox referenced above. However, the map is useless without the decoder key. Which can only be found by running a gauntlet of 100 trials and defeating a vampire. But, I locked my best wooden stake in the fireproof lockbox.

Stretch out, and roll with a lacrosse ball.
Heat sucks, but makes for good race day training. Otherwise, early morning runs FTW. Drink lots of electrolytes, not just water.

Check out compression sleeves, either for during the run, to wear afterwards, or both.
My bigger concern is my knees, so I often go for knee sleeves while running and if I'm motivated I do the calf sleeves during recovery. Not sure if I really notice a difference or not, but it's worth it for the placebo effect alone.

If you are cramping Lack of salt could be an issue on longer runs in this heat. So if you are properly hydrated try a salt tablet about half way.
This is probably what the mustard would do.

I saw a guy running along my street in a full black long sleeved shirt and track pants in the late afternoon. He looked like he was in good shape, so not the kind of guy who would have dressed improperly without a reason. Kind of wondering why somebody would want to endure that? Is that good for building up your endurance in heat, or is there some other reason? Maybe the material wasn't as heat absorbing as it looked, but I think I would pass out if I stepped outside in that, let alone started running at a pretty good clip.

I have found GGG's real identity. She is 94 year old Harriette Thompson.
Quote:
Harriette Thompson, 94, became the oldest woman to run a half-marathon on Sunday, but as spectators congratulated her at the finish line, she couldn't see what all the fuss was about.
'I guess it's unusual, but I don't know why people make such a big deal,' Thompson told NBC 4.
'I feel just like I did when I was 16. But I just can't move as fast.'

Is it a bad idea/unhealthy to run when there is so much smoke in the air?

Further to Troutman's ask, is there a AQHI number that is sort of the cut off? I was planning on going for a run after work today and the index is at 3 right now, with a forecast of 4 this evening. Should I not be running in a 4?

With regards to the smoke, I saw this race update from the Squamish 50 race directors:
https://www.facebook.com/squamish50/...44317648964359
They will run with an AQI of 7 or less, and possibly an 8. Seems like a decent measuring stick, especially if you're just going for an easy run.

So I did go for my run after work yesterday and the index was at 4. I noticed no difference personally and actually made really good time. So basically a level of 4 was not noticeable (at least to me), so I think I'd be comfortable even at a 5 or 6.

This sun is killing me. Monday was awesome for ~10km, but today I am just dead after 4km.
Does it just take getting used to or what?

Make sure you hydrate - lots. With this kind of heat, lower your usual pace by about 10-15 sec.
I try to do my runs first thing in the morning whenever possible. Just too hot this year.

Has someone tried Icebug shoes? I'm curious to know how do they fit vs more common brands like Adidas, New Balance.
Thanks!

I went with the Peregrines, but I think I saw them the Icebugs at Gords. They seems to have. A decent return policy if you don't put too many km on them, and keep them dry.
