Smid is a very solid defensive defenseman. Quite frankly the only one worth keeping on the back end in Edmonton going forward. He's big and uses his size well, moves pretty well, and kills penalties well (last time I saw him).
Roy is a mystery prospect for me, and I've never been very high on him, but we had so many good prospects ahead of Brossoit (Berra, Ramo?, Gillies, Ortio), so I knew we were going to move one of those goalies at some point. Brossoit might be good, but he's battled inconsistency which is not good for a goalie. Roy is simply a different inconsistent prospect that might not be as good as Brossoit, but is still a decent depth prospect.
Horak is what he is, a quality bottom line/fill-in center/winger. He's never really taken off offensively and while he works hard and is smart, he isn't much of a game changer. I wish him the best, but he doesn't have quite enough to be a regular NHLer IMO.
We got the best player in the deal. Smid is still 27, so he could be a leader for a young defense group and a stop gap for guys like Wotherspoon, Sieloff, and Ramage who had their development set back or stall in Abbotsford. We desperately needed some help on the back end and Smid fits exactly what we needed, plus is under contract for 3 more years.
We got better in the short term and long term with this deal IMO. Pretty happy all around.

I don't think anybody said that

Good trade imo. Smid is ok and definitely makes us stronger at the back. Horak didn't ever seem like a shoe-in for a starting spot and I wish him and Brossoit good luck up there.
This trade is made even better by the reaction from the oilers fans on HFBoards heh heh heh

He has shown that he can be a very solid defenseman, and is just entering the prime years for a d-man. This could turn out very well for the Flames

So, to get this straight:
They ship out one of their better d-men, then will shortly (apparently) sign Bryzgalov to play in net behind a weaker defense, expecting to get better results?
So best case is that they pretty much break even? I'm confused.

So even if you assume all 500 posts about Ladisav Smid were negative and that there are only 1,248 different CP posters (that number is probably 20 times) then no - MOST of CP has not always said Smid was terrible.

Maybe I should of worded it differently for you then. Anytime Smid was talked about on CP most people would say how terrible he was. Does this make you feel better?

It is the Oilers so you can't put anything past them. Logic has no place in that organization. But it's possible they could pull the trigger on a trade for another Dman in the near future. Coburn, maybe?

Brossoit was mocking Yakupov's slide across the ice less than a year ago.

I guess they need good PR - having a crappy team will do that...

Awesome deal! There was no room for Horak here and Brossoit is way down the depth list for us. Smid is exactly what the Flames need, great pick up! Atta boy Feaster!

As much as I like Horak and was interested in seeing Broissoit, they are expendable within the system. And we trade them for a top 4 dman and another good G prospect? I say well done Feaster.
Extra props for screwing the Oilers out of one of their only decent dmen.

I really like the trade for Calgary. We have plenty of similar prospects to Horak and Brossoit is kinda of stuck between Ortio and Gillies. Smid fills a huge hole in our lineup. Don't care about Roy, literally an extra body.
