It's no use debating this honestly, but unless the NHL can prove that Hartley instructed the players to start a line brawl, no rule was broken. In fact, the only actual rule that was broken was that Torts went to the Flames dressing room.

I hope 100% he does it again on 8 March, that would be pure gold.

Not sure why there is whining about the Hartley fine it was obvious that it was coming despite what puckluck said.

The league wants to hold coaches responsible for start if period/game fights and Westgarth had his gloves off half a second after the game started. It was clearly going to be a fine for Hartley as soon as that happened.

Split up McGrattan and Westgarth. Really, which line is my 4th line Mr. Campbell? What a joke by the NHL. If Bieksa was unwilling why did be force his way into the face off? Can Hartley appeal?

The league isn't out to get the Canucks. However the Canucks are akin to the Raiders in the NFL under Al Davis. A perennial pest and thorn in their side that the league won't go out of their way to do any favours.

Although it's not my money, I think for the Flames they get great value.

$25k to create a buzz amongst a bored fan base, and totally troll a rival is money well spent.

I fully support Hartley starting the 4th line. That sawed off want to be big man Torts did not have to respond with his fighters but he did. Grats and Wesgarth would not have forced the Sedins or any other non fighter to throw down. Enforcers are not like that they would look like asses around the league forcing a Sedin kind of player into a fight and therefore wouldn't do it. The puck would have dropped and nothing more would have taken place other than Hartley getting the 4th line off the ice after the opening shift.
Torts bit because He is weak minded.
Just ask yourself this 1 question if a team playing their 4th line ices the puck. Does a smart coach put out their 4th line also? No they immediately put out their 1st or 2nd line to create a skill and speed miss match in their favor.
Torts decided to not be smart and instead chose what he chose.
The fact he tried to storm the Flames dressing room just further shows to what level of a hot headed goof he really is.

Thats a pretty stiff punishment for Torts. Hartley will get his fine back at the end of the year probably

Just as an aside, anybody who compares McGrattan to Jon Scott or this situation to the Buf/Tor preseason is an idiot. All 5 fights on the ice were fair matchups and every participant was willing

Really the only guy who "jumped" somebody all game was Kassian

This opens some interesting questions for me. For example, who was the unwilling opponent?

The first thought that occurred was that Lain didn't want to fight. It could have very well been, since we don't have audio, that Westgarth was saying something along the lines of dropping the gloves as soon as the puck dropped, but Lain was hesitant. Which would explain why Bieksa kept skating up and eventually took his spot...then ran away when he realized Westgarth could fight.

Another sign of the NHL getting soft and boring? That hasn't been a fine in the past, the Rolston/Scott one was a completely different scenario.

"Unwilling opponent"? I'm sorry, did a defenceman step into the faceoff circle to win the puck and rush up solo down the middle? Doubtfull. Bieksa knew what was going to happen

Yup 15 days/6 games seems about right. I would have pegged it at 5 games myself, but I can't fault the NHL for tossing a 6th game in there. We all knew Hartley wasn't gonna walk away from this unscathed, so a token fine was in order.

Even if you accept a comparison to the Scott/ Kessel situation, the only person who was at risk of injury was Scott from Kessel's stick.

The notion of a 'Goon' jumping a 'Star' is total BS. It does not happen. Being chased around the rink? Sure.

I challenge anyone to bring up an incident where it has. Bonus point for an incident that has resulted in an injury like the ones Tortorella was claiming could have happened.

Based on the Flames reaction, their intention was not to physically punish the Canucks, but to agitate them and tick them off.

Never doubt the willingness to promote (and celebrate) a$$hattery by the Canucks and their 'fans'.

(1/2) I am perplexed by this fine. I stand behind Bob Hartley completely in this regard …

(2/2) and remain confident that he acted properly in every aspect of this game.
