Let's Talk About Sean Monahan
Monahan hasn't looked like himself so far. He has 4 goals, yes but for those who watch the games can see something isn't right.
To me, it's a combination of things for him - missing all of the training camp and pre-season due to injury sustained and I get the feeling he's not 100% recovered from the injury but it's not something that requires him to sit out as he can play with it but it is impacting his performance.
I think he'll be fine having said all this at some point. Just hoping it's sooner rather than later.
Your thoughts?

He hasn't looked great and some of that is likely due to training camp/injury. With that said, he should be pulling out of that by now given all the games he's played.
The concerning thing for me is that his game has become extremely passive. There's next to no drive to the greasy areas and the puck doesn't seem to be staying on his stick much.
I'm confident he'll turn it around but hopefully this happens sooner than later. The rest of the team is certainly starting to look better than they have since the playoff season. Adding a Monohan firing on all cylinders would go a long way.

He'll be better. He's a really young 22 year old going through a rough patch. All players go through them.
Still sucks to see him playing like this though.

I'm not always impressed with his game even when he puts up points and I think he needs to either improve his skating or puck protection skills to be a number one center.
But what he has done to this point in his career has been very impressive. Not many 22 year olds have as much responsibility to their teams success as monahan. As long as I'm seeing small steady small improvements on things like face offs, positioning, and poise with the puck I can't be overly disappointed. Monahan when healthy will be able to pot the puck better than most.
He's a smart, dedicated, and mature player. He has warts to his game, he isn't the most creative offensive player, and he isn't the most consistent yet. I think when we as fans and the organization put less emphasis on him NEEDING to score from us to win he can focus on doing the small things that contribute to wins in their own way.

I think both Monahan and Gaudreau are feeling the weight of their new contracts and the pressure of expectation that comes with it. I think it won't be long before they both find their groove.

I think the contract pressure could be impacting both Monahan and Gaudreau. I think the back injury isn't helping.

I dont want to talk about Monahan. I want to pretend nothing is wrong......until its too late.
I dunno, maybe he should cut his hair for good luck?

Too late for what, exactly?

Hopefully it's the injury because he doesn't even look like an NHLer so far this season. He is actually hurting the team.

Lets be honest here, there hasn't been a great deal of progression in his game since his rookie season. His skating is terrible. He is constantly gliding when he should be moving his feet. He is incapable of skating the puck into the zone. He refuses to use his body.
He's got a nice wrister and is pretty good in the dot. That isn't enough in the NHL today.
I want to like him but he is the player im most concerned about right now. You'd think with the struggles he's having and the fact he's slowly losing ice time he'd come out fired up but he's getting more passive every game.

Should we all write a letter to Ken King to make him aware that Monahan is playing terrible?
I know Johnny isn't having a great year either, but he is shouldering the most criticism and he has more points than Monahan (and playing better) and is only making a few hundred thousand more than Mony

Coming off injury.
Missed training camp.
Off to a slow start.
I fail to see what is panic inducing about this.

He's good at passing it to the other team. His head isn't in the right place at this time. I don't know if he is putting a lot of pressure on himself because of his new contract or what. Hopefully he snaps out of his slump because this team needs him in the worst way.

He's playing so bad that it actually lessens my worry.
There's no way that there isn't some factor effecting his play.

I will be honest, I haven't been paying too much attention to who he has been matched up against, but I wonder if moving him down a line or two would help.
Get him against softer opposition, and build his confidence.
One thing I am sure we all agree upon, the team needs him and JG to be playing as they have in the past.

Barkov, Lindholm, Drouin...and even Mackinnon (lesser extent) all seem to be struggling a bit offensively to start the season.

Good point. Him and Mackinnon seem to have so much potential but seem to be missing the "drive" to be elite.
Mackinnon especially should be one of the best players in the league with his speed, size, and shot. People will always compare the two for obvious reasons and they've both been pretty disappointing to start the year. No consistency to their games.
