Islanders pull off a deal with Vancouver
Some of you may not like this one but I feel it's a really necessary move for my club...
To Canucks
D Travis Hamonic ($4.75 million/1 year)
F Tyler Gaudet ($750k/1 year/AHL)
To Islanders
2017 1st-round pick (NJ)
2017 3rd-round pick (VAN)
F Thomas Vanek ($5 million/2 years)
F Tom Kuhnhackl ($750k/2 years)
Vanek gives me a quality top-line forward next season. He's quietly having a killer year in the NHL, one which will translate to a killer re-rate. I also get a first-rounder, and while it may not be the highest pick ever, it will go a long way towards giving me a good prospect (and it gives me a basis for possibly being able to trade up). A third-rounder is easily flippable.
Kuhnhackl is a young bottom-six forward having a good year for the Penguins. Forwards on that team are wildcards... in the right situation, their statistics can go bananas, which is why I've acquired as many as I have this season (Sheary, Rust, and now Kuhnhackl) for very low prices.
Hamonic is having a dreadful year for the real-life Islanders, yet even still, he was due a re-upping at the end of the season which would likely cost me more than Vanek will. I'm looking to control my costs going forward, so paying $5 million for Vanek into next year solidifies my monetary situation a fair bit.
Here's my new roster. Note that I'm fully past caring about my results this year... I'm just trying to acquire players who will get solid bumps next year.
Josh Bailey - David Krejci - Thomas Vanek
Ryan Spooner - Conor Sheary - Jonathan Marchessault
Leo Komarov - Derek Ryan - Radim Vrbata
Carl Hagelin - Tim Schaller - Tobias Rieder
Bryan Rust
Dustin Byfuglien - Sami Vatanen
Jon Merrill - Josh Manson
Thomas Hickey - Kevan Miller
Deryk Engelland
Tuukka Rask
Chad Johnson
