I am looking at doing a trip to Europe in August and my travel agent gave me a few options including Air Canada Rouge (awful for economy) or Edelweiss.

I will be honest in I have never heard of this airline and I am wondering what anybody's experience is with them?

Thanks!

Random question that I figured the fine folks here might know the answer to.

Today I dropped off my brother-in-law & sister-in-law at YQY (they're heading out to the Stampede).

Air Canada Express and WestJet Encore each have a flight that leaves YQY to Halifax at 2:10pm.

WJ3487 (a Q400) departed first from runway 24 heading north and immediately banked west to turn itself around and head south to Halifax.

Immediately afterward, AC8807 (a Dash 8-300) departed runway 06 heading south.

Runway 24/06 is the same runway, just 24 is the northern part, and 06 the southern.

Why the bloodly hell did one depart north and one depart south? Like, I get if the winds were blowing a certain direction they'd want to depart north and then turn around. But they both essentially took off at the same time.

According to FlightAware WJ3487 at 1:59pm and AC8807 at 2:06pm. From inside the car it doesn't seem like there was any wind/major shift in wind.

Just seemed odd. Any theory?

Other airplanes? There are a whole bunch of other possibilities, but that is the most likely.

Air Canada flying the 787 Dreamliner on the 12.30pm Calgary-Toronto route this summer.

Flew business class in the pods yesterday. Beautiful plane. Can't believe how quiet compared to other aircraft.

Another possibly is taxi distance... at YQY you have to backtrack the entire length of the runway to depart 06, so if it's relatively calm wind and no conflicting traffic I'm sure they'd prefer to depart 24 when possible.

Before the parallel opened here that was not an uncommon thing, departures off 29 for the sole purpose of avoiding the taxi down to the threshold of 35L.

Oftentimes this is simply pilot preference. Within the realm of safety and taking the winds in to account, one crew may prefer to takeoff in the direction of the destination airport to avoid doing the airborne 180, whereas another will prioritize taking the headwind, avoiding backtrack on the ground, etc. Or yeah, other traffic is also a consideration.

The Dash 8-300 (or Dash Classic, or "Jurassic" as it's sometimes called) is a little less performance critical than the Q400 on most given days, so is more than capable of taking the odd light tailwind on takeoff or landing on pretty much any runway.

Thanks guy, I checked FlightRadar24 but there wasn't anything else in the area (at least that FlughtRadar24 tracks).

I may have the runways mixed up in the sense that WestJet did the long taxi, and Air Canada did the short one.

Regardless, thanks for the info. That was annoying me, haha

I've searched google and can't find any information regarding fighter jets flying around Calgary the last couple of days.

Friday and Saturday around 1:35 PM a pair of what I think might have been hornets?

Does anybody know why?

I'm going to guess it's a fly by for the rodeo.

I was checking out the news and thought this was pretty interesting this morning. It is neat to see other countries posting memorials like these so long after the war once more information can be dug up regarding what had happened.

It is also good to wake up to a nice news story for once.

At 87, she vividly recalls the moment the telegram arrived at her family's Hamilton, Ont., home, informing her parents that the brother she describes as "loving but quiet" was missing in action over Germany.

"I was upstairs in my bedroom, and my mother came running up and told me," Somers said.

"She kneeled at the side of the bed and said the Lord's Prayer."

"The next day my father's hair turned grey."

Summoning that memory still brings tears today, as Somers talks about the memorial to be unveiled in Germany later this month near the spot where the wreckage of her brother's Royal Canadian Air Force bomber fell to earth after it was hit by anti-aircraft fire in the early hours of July 29, 1944.

Just saw it overhead, must have been the angle I was at because it looked like it was lower and slower than other planes in this area, which I appreciated!

My daughter approves in that case. She's not a fan of the 'other' horse charters that we see here periodically.
