Earl's just continues to make dumb decisions that ensure I will never step foot in one again. No one is entitled to a tip.

I just came back from a short stay in Seattle and the hotel restaurant did the same thing (20%) though. I have mixed feelings on the situation because having worked in the service industry in the past I would be the first to tell anybody tips are earned not expected

Exactly. I expect that they remove the tipping option on all Point of Sale machines.

I'd go there just for this change. But I think it'll hurt them more than they think.

As far as I know, tips always go to kitchen staff, dishwasher, etc. A portion of the servers tips go into a jar and split up between those behind the scenes.
I am sure the average tip out of that place is at least 16% so making this mandatory just looks poor on their part IMO.

I don't believe in mandatory tipping, the fact that it's expected defeats the purpose entirely.

I suppose it happens, but I never saw a kitchen where waitresses shared tips. Trained chefs leave the industry real quick when they see how much more the wait staff earns.

Sharing tips is nothing new to earls. I worked there in the early 90's as a server and every time I cashed out I had to give a percentage of my tips to kitchen staff, dishwashers, hostesses and the busboy.

Interesting approach. I hate the whole concept of tipping so I'm glad that someone is trying this out. Probably will hurt them though.

It's quite common for servers to tip out.

But that's going to be a huge issue for the servers. Usually tip-outs aren't anywhere close to even. Not sure what of the original 16% the servers keeps but it does sound like it's split even, that would make serving there less than ideal.

Honestly, I don't like it if the minimum wage is being raised. Tips are supposed to supplement the low hourly wage that servers get. If that wage is now going to be $15 an hour, I don't see a need for mandatory tipping.

I thought we all established in the beef thread that only plebs eat at earls and we wouldn't dare go slumming at earls.
Looking at that menu it is literally a regular earls menu except water is now mineral water and is $4.

I'm quite disappointed they switched back. The US beef was a better product and you could tell.
