Ah super, a slightly more expensive H&M with a dash of American Eagle added into it!

I have such mixed feelings about this place. Used to go there all the time after work... Went on to meet my now wife there. At some point they stopped letting guys wearing Carhartts in. I went there nearly every Friday after work for 2 years only to be told my work pants were not welcome anymore!!! Disgraceful if you ask me... Your bar is in a frickin basement!

Eh I'm indifferent on the Unicorn. It was hit & miss in my experience. I see the appeal for sure, it's a great location for a dive basement bar, but the prices/food never hit that mark.

The Unicorn was considered a dive bar?

well I'd say I'm boycotting Simons, not just for Unicorn but all the local businesses being driven out, but really I never would have shopped there in the first place.

I said it in the other thread, but I have events at the Unicorn every 2 weeks or so; Its gotta be one of the worst bars in the downtown. It doesn't have the "local/homey" feel the Bear & Kilt does. Its got pretty average servers and the place is a dump, is often messy, and the food is all pre-made fried crap. At least (again) at the Bear & Kilt you can get a freshly made meal that isn't deep fried.
People who love it, I find, are simply holding onto the memories of bygone days. The place as it is, is nothing worth saving. Crappy staff with high turnover is nothing outside the norm in Calgary.
Great place if you like sticky shoes, Jager bombs, and feeling cramped though!

Guess the Bear and Kilt is the way to go. Was just there a few weekends ago, absolutely packed on a Saturday night. Great place.
Below Deck might fit the mould too but they are less of a dive than the others.

Man I remember when my aunt was doing their accounting in the 80's. Damn shame as it was a good location and I can't see it being the same in a different location.

The location was really what made it. Otherwise it was just like every other pub.

My Dad spent way too much time there.
I'll have to pay it one last visit in April.

If you like dingy basements check out Vern's or The Palomino.

Vern's is the best dive bar in the city, and anyone who thinks the Unicorn was a dive is so sheltered it's hilarious. At least the Unicorn has its ceiling intact.
Vern's is also Babies First Paid Live Gig, so you can make fun of all the terrible bands.

I was there when Martin Gelinas "scored" the goal in game 6 against Tampa in 2004. Our band had a great show there many years ago as well. It will be missed.

Place is a dive that lives on reputation alone. Food sucks, drinks suck, hours suck, service sucks... Only cool part is the location. Otherwise 1/10 would not bang...my drink on the bar there.
