Default The AHL Carousel continues: Vegas signs AHL affiliate agreement with Chicago Wolves

https://www.nhl.com/goldenknights/ne...nt/c-289468206

And in where do the St. Blues who were previously affiliated with Chicago?
They will assign players to the Vegas affiliate:
https://www.nhl.com/blues/news/armst...on/c-289468858

Move makes sense for Vegas as they won't have a lot of players to fill out an AHL team, so sharing with the Blues helps them fill out the roster.

More changes expected as well (maybe by next year?). Blues are reportedly looking to eventually have their own AHL team in the midwest closer to St. Louis and the Avs are reportedly looking to promote the Colorado Eagles to the AHL and use them as an affiliate eventually.

Hopefully Vegas will eventually have their AHL team in the west.

hmm some interesting comments from Chicago Wolves owner and the relationship with the Blues:

Quote:
Levin has been used to the Wolves winning since he and Chicago attorney Buddy Meyers founded the team in 1994. But his team's performance started slipping during its affiliation with the Blues. The 2015-16 season was the first time the Wolves lost more games than they won.

Part of the problem, Levin said, was his partnership with the Blues, which he called "a painful relationship for periods of time."

"St. Louis would like to see their guys win, but wouldn't put any effort into doing it," Levin said, noting that Wolves players signed to AHL contracts produced more on the ice than those signed to Blues contracts. "They didn't do what we expected them to do, and it was difficult."
Also interesting was that Doug Armstrong didn't even mention Chicago in his press release even though it came out after Vegas announced the affiliation.

Guess it really was a tough relationship.

Speculation is Colorado will get the 31st AHL team next summer and place it in Loveland, replacing the ECHL's Colorado Eagles. But Vegas having a team in Chicago is good for them IMO, it's a major hub that will reach pretty much any NHL city. I suspect the Blues affiliate will end up in San Antonio next year.

It is also interesting that St. Louis has reached an agreement with Vegas and not Chicago to send players to the Wolves.

Also, a new AHL-sized arena is being built in Fort Worth Texas. The Stars AHL affiliate seem settled in Austin at this time, but perhaps the Blues could become a tenant.

There has been a great deal of Kansas City speculation around the Blues too, but that seems to have faded over recent months.

Apparently the ECHL is also preparing to put a team in Reno for the 2018/2019 season. That could be potentially the final spot for the Vegas AHL team once they build up their prospect base.

Or at least an ECHL affiliate for the Knights at some point.

strange perspective since 6 of the 7 top scorers on the Wolves are on NHL contracts, including the leagues top scorer and MVP

Reminds me of a story surrounding Scotty Bowman when he was coaching the Blues.. A couple of players skipped the teams curfew and slipped out of the hotel to a bar near by. As they were drinking beers in walks Scotty Bowman who sees the 2 players. He orders a beer and walks over to the jukebox, slips in a quarter and picks the song "Kansas City Here I Come". The next morning those 2 players were sent down to the Blues farm team in KC

The Chicago Wolves are the kind of team that is rapidly changing the face of the AHL - where the NHL parents own the teams instead of independent owners. The Wolves' owner is all about winning. He doesn't really care about the development side of things, or the needs of his parent team. So it's not surprising that when he does fail to win, he lashes out and blames everyone else.

Back in the Bill Wirtz days, the Wolves consistently outdrew the Blackhawks. They'd sign veteran NHLers playing out the string, but still effective at the AHL level. Their business model was that of a independent team with a smattering of loaned prospects.
