Islanders pull off two deals with the Sharks

LW Chris Kunitz ($9,999,999 until 2018)
$2,500,000 for 2017-18

To Islanders:

128th-overall pick in 2017

Second deal:

To Sharks:

RW Radim Vrbata ($1,220,000 until 2019)
2018 1st-round pick*

To Islanders:

D Paul Martin ($7,000,000 until 2018)
2018 2nd-round pick**

*pick owed by September 30, 2017
**pick becomes a 3rd-rounder if Vrbata fails to score at least 50 points in 2017-18

Essentially, out of the $9.99m corpse of Chris Kunitz, I've done this over the course of two deals:

I don't see the need to move the 2.5mill for a guy who is sitting in the AHL. It pretty well gives the sharks free cap. Especially seeing you are taking on Martin at 7 mill and trading another cap friendly guy in Vrbata and adding a 1st.
Not sure I see your angle on these moves at all.

Well first, provided that Vrbata plays in the sim this year like he did last, I get a second-rounder back

Second, Martin was already a 77OV, and he had a better 2016-17 than his 2015-16, so that could go up

Third, my forwards are already dirt-cheap anyway

It's more the 1st part of the deal that is really strange to me. You could have left Kunitz in the AHL. So you basically traded 2.5mill in cap for a 5th rounder.

yeah but I had no room for him there at all, especially with Steve Gionta additionally making $700k down there...

plus it incentivized Dave to send me Martin who is definitely more valuable than Vrbata for a slightly-better pick

I can let Kunitz rot in the AHL and got $2.5mill for a 5th.

I freed up $6mill in the 2nd trade to go after a UFA meanwhile will be able to satisfy a trade condition with the Wild by also getting the 1st.

Scorp you may think I was 'incentivized' but I got exactly what I wanted here.
