Default [Article] What's wrong with Johnny Gaudreau? (not much)

Definitely recommend giving this article by Kent Wilson a read. It dives into Johnny's season, and what he finds should help some of the more pessimistic folks back away from the ledge.

Quote:
Some may wonder why Gaudreau also looks poor if many of his underlying numbers are improved or stable. The answer is that bad results and lousy percentages will make any player look bad because we both consciously and unconsciously evaluate guys by things like goals for and against. When the puck isn't going in for a guy who is supposed to score, his faults become magnified and his strengths muted.

Once Gaudreau's on-ice shooting percentage regresses to the mean, he'll start to look like the player we've come to know and love in Calgary.

Most of the shots from his line are easy for NHL goalies to see and stop.

They need to get into the dirty areas more.

Now that a reputable, level headed article is out on Gaudreau's struggles that pays attention to the cold hard facts of the matter at hand can we lock that tire fire of a thread that came from a reporter and fan-boy/stalker of the tire fire up north?

That thread angered me probably more than any other thread on CP; the shear obsurdity of some of the fanbase turning on Johnny like they did in that thread through the encouragement of a weasel like Spector was shocking.

Those who want to trade Johnny still... please give your head a shake. We didn't know completely what we had when we traded away guys like Hull, Savard, St.Louis... we know what we have in Johnny and would be foolish to trade him for a 'fair' hockey trade type return.

I actually think there is some merit to this. If Johnny wants to play this grindier style, he will have to get stronger, more balanced, and more explosive. Like Byron, Panarin, MSL.

I get a kick out of comments like this:
"His GF%, or goals for and against ratio at 5on5, is just 37%, which explains that ugly plus/minus rating. "

That's not the expected logical sequence.

Remember when everyone was so exasperated with Paul Byron when he couldn't score on breakaways? His shooting percentage his last year here was 9.7% and he has been at over 20% shooting percentage the past two seasons. Johnny's at 8.1% this season.

Johnny might be generating more shots than previous seasons but it doesn't mean too much if we aren't scoring. In fact, the inability to score demoralizes the team and raises the hope of a team otherwise being outplayed. People talk about the team losing confidence and playing tight when their goalie doesn't come up with key saves but it works the other way too with failing to capitalize on scoring chances.

Stats aside, we can see that he isn't the same player this year. He loses the puck more, he doesn't have the same confidence, he doesn't have the same compete level a lot of the time, he is too easily frustrated. Shooting percentage clearly involves more than just luck. It matters. You can't just write it off especially when you're looking at a "star" that isn't producing. It's nice to see the numbers show that our best players are still working hard and getting shots at the net but it's the ability to put the puck in that makes them elite. Anything beyond that is pretty cold comfort.

I think trading away Hudler affected both Gaudreau and Monahan drastically this year. Right now, there's a gaping hole on right wing on the first line that can't be filled by any of the players the Flames currently have. So, with Hudler gone, every opposition's focus is on Gaudreau. It was the same thing with Iggy, except Iggy man-handled everyone even when two or three guys draped all over him and he still scored. Flames gotta find a player to compliment Gaudreau.

I think either Tkachuk, Bennet or Ferlund with Gaudreau is something that would work better than Monny.
Sean just doesn't get to the dirty areas like those 2 and even go out on a limb and say we've yet to see the best of Tkachuk , Bennet and Ferlund.

Either of those 3 at their feisty best and maybe #13 has more time and space making hI'm more lethal.

I still think the early injury and Wideman effect hurts Johnny but it's just my kool-aid
