If it's an MCL sprain (just guessing), then he won't be advised to put much weight on it for at least 3-4 weeks. You can do *very* light exercises during this time, but nothing too much. Once he can start to put weight on it and has basic stability, then the more serious rehab.
My bet: in 6 weeks he might be back on the ice for a skate. I'd wager he doesn't play another game this year.
