Drouhin was moved to a new position, center, in junior last season. It gave him the chance to play a different role and develop his on-ice vision further. Reinhart would need a challenge too.

Good point.
Curious to know how a guy like that would have fared today. I expect not spectacularly

Smarts and hands are great, but if you're average or below-average in those other qualities, it's going to limit your impact.

Patrick Kane? Although he does have decent speed.

Kane has a pretty good shot and I'd say he's fast.

No such thing as a third round bust who plays even a single NHL game.

That's a pretty big promotion for Sam Reinhart going from a peewee team to a major junior team.

Not sure what he can learn back in junior, sort of his 5th season in Kootenay. There should be some kind of deal to have these kids play in the AHL after so many junior games(Sam is over 200 already) or drop a year to age 19 for top 10 picks.
Was never a big fan of his game but I do think if he develops properly he'll be good player.

I meant any of them.

Having seen him live last season I was glad we never had a chance to take him, I can see the talent and how he reads the game but his speed, and mannerism just made me think he doesn't have the drive to succeed right away. He just seemed way too laid back for my liking, where as Sam Bennett you could see that drive to succeed which I think will turn him into a way better player short and long term.

Seems like the right move - he hasn't looked ready from what I've seen. Which is fine.
Having said that, I was so glad we got Bennett. I too think he could turn out to be the best player in the draft.

Gretzky's straight-line speed was nothing special, but he had fantastic agility and short-burst acceleration. Many players found this out by lining him up for a big hit, only to discover that he was somewhere else before they arrived.
Back on topic: Reinhart certainly hasn't been impressive so far this year. If he were on my team and I wanted to tank, I'd definitely keep him up, because at the moment he just doesn't look like an NHL player. Wise move by the Sabres to send him back.

Gretzky had incredible quickness.
He actually reminds me of Johnny Gaudreau.

And get real guys, it's way too early to be putting Bennett or Reinhart against each other. At this point Reinhart has NHL experience and will tear up another year at junior and probably captain Team Canada at the world juniors. Bennett is losing a whole year of that kind of development. Far from a slam dunk win at this point.
|
Who is saying its slam dunk. Big difference between "slam dunk"and "wouldn't be surprised"

So only Ekblad and Draisaitl left of all the top picks? And Draisaitl is clearly in over his head. Who would have thought?

There were a lot of reports, before the draft, that they were the only two physically ready. Makes sense to me.

People also forget that Gretzky also had a great slap shot early on.

Reinhart is close to a year older than Bennett. Even if Bennett loses 6 months of hockey this season he still almost a full year less in his development to get where Reinhart is now and their play was essentially the same level last year. I believe I am getting real putting them up against one another as they will always be tied to a certain point because the player the Sabres didn't pick was the one the Flames were going to get. IMO the Flames were very fortunate as it's my feeling Bennett is going to be a more impactful NHLer.
