I would rather have Smid at his current deal than Fayne or Nikitin at theirs

I remember when Denis Grebeshkov made as much as Smid does now.

Lol, this coming from a team who paid Shawn Horcoff 7 million per year.

Speaking of Horak, Erixon finally scored his first NHL goal the other night.

Thanks for not signing Tim, and getting us Granlund, Wotherspoon and (eventually) Smid.

He's right that Smid isn't anything special. He hasn't lived up to the billing that he once had. But he's still a solid d-man who is willing to sacrifice the body and block shots when called upon. I'll take that over a KHLer and ECHLer.

That being said, it's interesting to note that the Oilers' #2 is our #5.

I know I'm beating a dead horse by this point, but I think the biggest problem Edmonton has is their young players are gifted positions simply because the veterans are so easy to outshine.

Nurse, Marincin, Klefbom, etc.. have to beat out guys like Brad Hunt instead of Ladislav Smid. While Smid is overpaid, he is a bonafide 3rd line defenseman. He's the type of player you want your defence prospects to be better than to earn a spot.

If Wotherspoon, Sieloff, etc... can't beat out Smid for a spot, they are not ready to be in the NHL. I look forward to the day they make Smid expendable. But Edmonton traded him about 2 years before any of their young d prospects are ready to take his place.

The Journal got it wrong, it should be "Cult of Oilers". Not sure if you can call anything the Oilers do as hockey.

I'm not sure who this Willis guy is but the only media people I trust from up there would be Jim Matheson and Rod Phillips. Matheson gently says things and is respected, and now that Phillips is retired his tweets about the Oilers are pretty blunt on the negative side.

If Edmonton is the outhouse of the NHL, does that make Lowe the leader of the Bowel Movementarians?

This guy MUST be getting paid under the table by the Oiler PR Department.

Oiler propaganda at it's worst. Edmonton is no good.

If I know the Oilers, how he's getting 'paid' is by not having his media pass revoked. The Ministry of Truth is strong up there.

The only fleecing the Oilers ownership and management can receive accolades for over the last 8 years?

Oiler fans...tier one and two.

I am not sure how much we benefitted as the team is likely better with Smith/Wotherspoon/Cubdari/AHLer x in the line-up and no better/worse with Diaz in line-up this year, but the writer is insane to think that getting some marginal, at best, prospects and some cap space is a fleecing.

It was a deal in which neither team really won or lose. The Flames got a warm body, the Oikers got cap space they immediately wasted. Neither team improved, neither was really hurt by the deal.

It was a pretty nothing trade an an odd one to write an article about.

Why would the team be better or no worse with the likes of Smith/Cundari in the lineup. Wotherspoon MAYBE but I doubt it.
Cundari isn't showing he can play in the NHL at the AHL level.

Smid played 5/6th minutes of bad hockey last year. Replacing him with bottom pairing minutes playing bad hockey isn't likely to change the Flames finishing 27th last year. Maybe better because Smith/Cundari have the potential to score a goal or two so maybe they are able to get a goal in a 1 goal game while providing a similar level of below average defense that Smid does.

Smith had a brief period where he looked good and post injury was terrible. Cundari will never play in the NHL. Not sure why his name is even brought up ever in Flames circles as he's just AHL filler and isn't part of the Flames future. Not sure how you can think the Flames would be better replacing a legit NHL defenseman with career AHLers. That's Oilers fan logic there.
