I'm not sure you can call it filler when it's based off multiple 900+ page books. They cut ruthlessly just to get it down to 10 episode seasons. In the last season, in particular, they threw all logistics and consistency to the wind, when distances that took 6 or 7 episodes for characters to travel in previous seasons (ie from the Wall to Winterfell, or the Iron Isles to Slavers Bay) are now reached via teleportation in half an episode.
I think most of the changes they've made to Martin's books have been for the better, but they can't just chuck all the epic plotlines and make up their own punchy ending. They have to at least cover the main storylines in a satisfactory manner.

SHHH!!! You'll anger them.. we must not talk of the epic travel times. Just pretend they can gate travel like in Ultima Online. "Vas Rel Por!"

The long travel was part of the world building in earlier seasons, but now that we're familiar with it all, there's no need to repeat the really long treks on camera.
