not disagreeing, but I do think that whole brother thing is overrated here. Tons of examples where players didn't follow their brothers. Just recently, the Carey brothers didn't sign as a "package deal" (as McKenzie had suggested), but signed with Phoenix (Greg) and Chicago (Matt) respectively. Trevor van Riemsdyk, a highly coveted college UFA, didn't sign in Toronto after this season, but went to Chicago instead. Just two recent examples where brothers could have easily landed on the same NHL team, but didn't. Doesn't have to mean anything though, the family factor could easily be bigger to Hayes for all we know.

On February 16, a report from BC Interruption noted that Hayes was suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules. Okay, no big deal, these things happen all the time, right? Tyler Seguin broke team rules and got suspended for a game in Winnipeg that one time, it was probably just something stupid, let's focus on the next game, right?

Not so fast, friend. In the comments of said BC Interruption post, the suspension was explained. From Tommykay:

A friend of mine was at a part with Kevin at a party. Apparently he stumbled out drunk, took a dump on the stairwell. He fell asleep in the ground floor public bathrooms in Walsh. When he woke up, he was naked and had to walk back to Edmonds with a garbage bag on.

The interesting thing is that this hasn't become a big story yet. I remember when Schultz and Wheeler weren't going to sign with the teams that drafted them, it was all over TSN and articles were written in the national media about how teams were lining up to sign them. There isn't much even in Chicago media.

Tells me

a. the door isn't completely shut to sign with Chicago

and/or

b. as a prospect no one really cares that much about Kevin Hayes

It's also not as big of a story because he's a senior who put up great stats in his final year, not a star junior who exploited a loophole to hit July 1st UFA.

Chicago Blackhawks forward prospect Kevin Hayes is in no rush to decide whether to sign with the organization, according to his agent Tuesday.

The 21-year-old Hayes was selected by the Blackhawks as the No. 24 overall pick of the 2010 draft. He became eligible to sign with the Blackhawks after his senior season at Boston College ended in the Frozen Four on April 10. He was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, which is given to the NCAA’s top player, and finished second in the nation with 65 points during his senior season.

“Because Boston College’s season ended so late, there’s no urgency to make a decision right away,” Hayes’ agent Robert Murray said in a phone interview Tuesday. “We just decided to sit back and take our time. When Kevin gets back from the World’s, we’ll kind of follow up.

“There’s no decision made on any of that right now. There’s no decision that he’s not going to sign with Chicago. I’ve tried to stress that with Chicago. That’s not the intent -- because he hasn’t signed yet, [he won’t sign ever.] That’s not the case.”

Also in the article says brother Jimmy's trade has nothing to do with Kevin's decision.

“There are a number of issues we’re trying to evaluate,” Murray said. “Depth of organization has some bearing on it. There’s just a bunch of criteria we’re trying to take a look at. The situation is there’s no urgency for sign for Kevin. He’s not going to play anywhere until training camp in September. Whether he signs today or two weeks from now or a month from now, it doesn’t make any difference. There’s no reason in our mind to rush into something until he can decide something and see where things are at.”
