How sick would it be to draft Sam Reinhart AND Ryan MacInnis.
Sam Reinhart, Max Reinhart, John Ramage, Ryan MacInnis...

I know this draft seems to be all about Reinhart and Ekblad but what little I've seen from Michael Nylander's son, William Nylander, has really impressed me. The kid is uber talented.

No heart for Reinhart.
I think Reinhart is unfairly compared to MacKinnon. MacKinnon was supposed to be this generational talent (or near so) and had been followed in anticipation for a couple of years. His past year in junior was 'disappointing' for all the hype, but still good enough to be selected 1st over-all. He is a much better prospect than anything in the past few years - at least from the 'Edmonton years' anyways.
Reinhart I think will end up being a pretty good #1 center. He does it all, and has very high IQ, playmaking ability.
I think this draft class becomes 'normalized' back to the last few drafts before this past 2013 draft. I believe near the top you will still get a very good piece you can build around, not just a piece to support the rebuild. Rankings will change and players will move up and down, but my money is that Reinhart ends up being selected 1st over-all. Hopefully the Flames win the lottery irregardless of where they finish (of course, they would have to finish out of playoff contention).
As for the Flames picking more heavily in D, I don't think they will. I believe they will most likely keep selecting BPA. If they feel two players are essentially tied, if one is a defencemen or a RW, then they will pick by position. I just don't think they will go out and select D if there are forwards more highly rated.
Their stable of D prospects is not that 'great' yet, but it is very much an unknown still. There have been lots of defencemen selected in the first round who carried a lot of hope, only to really have trouble cracking the NHL and had their stock tumble (i.e. Siemens - the guy that Ferland fought in the AHL last week).
I think it is a fairly sound strategy to continue selecting forwards in the 1st round, and then select BPA. However, if the Flames find themselves in a position like Nashville did with Jones falling to them, of course you snatch up Ekblad or McKeown (some feel he is a much better skater and offensively gifted over Ekblad, and could actually displace Ekblad) - as long as the Flames have them ranked ahead of the rest.
Hope the Flames trade with Philly and get a non-lottery protected 1st round pick for whatever they send to them. Imagine potentially having 2 top 5 picks. Would be totally cool getting another highly-touted son of a former Flame again - though let's just pick BPA.

Sam Reinhart is a fantastic player. Far better than his brothers. First overall or 5th overall, whoever gets him is getting the best player in this upcoming draft.

If we end up picking 6th again, I wouldn't mind getting Leon Draisaitl. Another dart thrown toward a center couldn't hurt... but mainly, I just want a player named Leon.

I know we should always go with the BPA, but Ekblad seems like the kind of defenseman that championship teams are built around. Being that our current defense group is pretty terrible, it would be terrific to have someone of Ekblad's talent level in the new young defense group. Brodie needs a big shutdown guy to play with who can also play some offense. I don't see anyone else in our organization that comes close to that level.

Ekblad is just too good to pass up. The people who say not to pick defensmen early because defensemen can be had in free agency, I have a question? How many teams did Lindstrom hit UFA?
I'm not saying Ekblad is the next perenial Norris trophy winner but the guys who are that good, don't go to UFA that often. Chara has been a UFA once... If we can get someone that good and keep them in the organization we should. I think skilled forwards are more available then real #1 defensmen who are game changers and that's what Ekblad looks like.
Waaaay too good to pass up.

I would be fine with Ekblad as the Flames could really use a future franchise defenseman in the system.

I think our training camp was more aggressive than others and like other young teams in the past (i.e. the Oilers) we'll start off a little ahead of the rest of the league in terms of pace and conditioning and win a few games based on effort. Then we'll fall back to earth.
I don't know if we're bottom 3 bad. Likely bottom 5-6. Trading guys like Stajan/Stempniak/Cammellari at the deadline (or before) will expose the team even more.

With 79 games remaining I don't think you can rule anything out at this point.

I have a funny feeling when all is said and done that the Flames will not be picking in the top 3. If we end up around 6 again then Virtanen would be interesting. Add more size and skill.
