The Monster is a UFA, and has history with Burke. He's actually played pretty well in Detroit as well, wouldn't mind signing him to be the back up and push Ramo to continue improving.
Let Ortio start the bulk of the games in the AHL, come up in case of injury (like this season) and ripen on the vine.

If we're bringing in guys to help us be competitive I think we should target guys for the medium to long term, otherwise short term improvement will simply lead to us getting middling draft picks and sliding down the standings as they age or once they leave. This means taking players in their twenties. If you simply want older players with production offer a huge deal to Cammie without a no trade clause.

If the Flames can shed themselves of Wideman and SOB, I'd love to see Sarich come back on a 1-year deal to play bottom pairing minutes.
For the Flames, right now, UFAs should fill the bottom lines and pairings and be solely stop gaps. Any big and/or long term deals would be a horrible misstep.

Sarich? I like the guy, but that would be a terrible signing.

Yeah he'll probably get more than 2m on the open market, but I can't see him getting the 3.25m he made in 2013/14.
|
The cap is going up. At the least, he will be taking the same contract as he did with LA at 2.95m. If the Flames want him, we'd have to go with 3.25mish.

Doesn't Vrbata usually rank pretty high for corsi numbers? I think he would be a solid top 6 addition, and would add a right handed shot which is badly needed.

I'd like to see Backlund and Monahan have a winger aside from Hudler that can put up points, and more importantly score goals so paying one of the top end wingers is something that I think wouldn't strangle us cap wise later and could be beneficial for the young guys' development.

My wish list would be:
Top 6: Vrbata
Bottom 6: Leo Komarov (not sure if he counts as UFA, but still)
Backup Goalie: Many to choose from, don't overpay.

Not to the 72m that was initially speculated.
The decrease in value of the CAD, combined with the fact that only 1 Canadian team even made the playoffs this year, is going to bring 2013/14 revenue in at a lower number than was projected at the beginning of the season.
Does LA have the capspace to spend 3m on their #6/7 Dman?

Always thought he's a better player than deserves credit for

Strange that whenever a player started to play well, we wanted to trade him. Anyways, no thanks to Cam Ward..his game is in a decline that's the reason why Carolina wanted to get rid of him. He is also making so much money for a backup goaltender. How do you think Ramo would feel playing a lot more games and his salary is more than his backup. I am hoping that Burkie is true to his words in saying Ramo will be the starter next season. I am sort of happy with JoeyMac as a backup but I am hoping for a little bit more. Also, no to Reimer either.

Setoguchi and Greene being my two realistic choices. Jagr would be great to fill Cammy's spot but I bet he stays in NJ.
Backup goalie I'm not too worried, fine with re-signing JoeyMac, or getting someone like the Monster, Griess or Khudobin.

Yeah but we have a lot of RFAs to sign. If we have to Add someone I would say a Callahan type rw.

None.
Eichel or McDavid would look much better.

What do people think about Al Montoya? Was this year a fluke? .920 sv% etc... He looked great while Pavelec was out.
29 years old, made $600K this year. I think he'd be a huge upgrade on Joey Mac as backup. He and Ramo would make an excellent 1a/1b tandem.

I don't like Montoya, really inconsistent player. He's either at the .920 SV% and under 2.5 GAA or he's in the .880s and over 3 GAA. The one thing I want from a backup going forward is consistency, even if it's only average or slightly below average consistency (I know, I know, ALL backups are inconsistent hence why they are backups).

+1 on Komarov, Burke should have connections to him, and after seeing his play for the Fins in the Olympics I would love to bring him to Calgary. He's the type of player the Flames have been missing for years.

**WET BLANKET**
I know we all love the Flames and everyone loves Jagr (now), but really, why would he come here? Under the circumstances - he has a year or two left at best, probably more money than god, the Flames left the Patrick Division 35 years ago, the Flames are not going to win anything before he retires - it seems crazy to me.
Downie and Greene aren't exactly glamorous, but they fit the bill pretty good.
