I am not saying he won't be protected. I am just saying if he is exposed LV will not think twice about picking him up. Oh yeah I did say "IF not protected". Flames and every team has to lose one player to expansion draft. That is why it is MUST for the Flames to protect him. Who do you think Flames will lose? I am hoping LV picks up Mason Raymond. I know they will not touch Bollig. So with Mony, Johnny, Bennett, Backs, Frolik, Ferland or maybe Colborne protected, we might even lose Lance Bouma.

With the current Flames roster, we'd likely lose one of Colborne, Ferland, Bouma, or Jokipakka.

I would figure Colborne gets protected though depending on his upcoming season.

Yep, definitely a possibility. In that case:

8 Skaters
1. Gaudreau
2. Monahan
3. Bennett
4. Backlund
5. Giordano
6. Brodie
7. Hamilton
8. Jokipakka

1 Goalie
1. Whoever we acquire

So I figure scenario 1 with 7 F + 3D we lose Jokipakka, and in this scenario we lose Frolik.

Well it all depends on how they preform next season.

Right now, my guess is the Flames will lose either Jokipakka or Stajan (if Vegas wants a veteran leader and needs to add some cap hit).

Good point about Nakladal. Yeah -- I don't see how the Flames can meet the exposure requirement for D without exposing Jokipakka. Short of exposing one of Giordano, Brodie, or Hamilton. Which won't happen, of course.

Id be fine losing Kevin, he's good and all but I think he can be replaced by a prospect. i think colborne will be traded otherwise I think he'd be the guy lost to expansion.

You should check out generalfanager or some comparable site for player contracts. As is stands Raymond's, Bollig's, and Engelland's contracts run out at the end of this season and will be UFAs, so anyone can have them including LV and unless re-signed won't go through the expansion draft. Oh yeah Wideman and Smid as well.

I have a feeling Brossoit is going to be picked by Vegas in the expansion draft.

Here is a chart showing what the expansion draft for goalies CURRENTLY looks like.

Of course it will change as trades and UFA signings happen throughout the next year. Changes or not, there will be lots of really good goalies (both veteran and young with upside) for Vegas to choose from.

Philly is an interesting case for me. Both Neuvirth and Mason are UFA's after next season and are quality young starters, but if they extend either of them they still might be inclined to protect Stolarz who they seem very high on as their goalie of the future.

Also Vancouver has two UFA goalies after this season as well. But unlike Philly they just signed their goalie fo the future and wouldn't have to protect Demko from expansion. I imagine they'd like to extend Markstrom, but they might wait it out and attempt to snag a highly touted goalie for cheap at the 11th hour for peanuts.

Again, this all depends upon who all the Oilers have left exposed on their unprotected list, and who every other team has left available. There are going to be a lot of fairly good goalies exposed, and the LV team will need to make decisions to select a specific number of forwards, defensemen, and goalies all meeting a minimum payroll requirement of $43 m.

Yah I mean he showed a little but of potential last year but unless he has a big year this year I think there will be better goalies available.

Why does generalfanager list Shinkaruk as exempt?
He has already played 2 pro seasons, and next year will be his 3rd?
Is it an age thing?

sliding contract issue for all three of them as far as I understand. Had that twitter conversation with General Fanager and Haynes this morning.

Because there's some doubt that the pro season he played when he was 19/20 counts as a pro year. Both he and Poirier entered the AHL early due to their birth dates.

Looks like the league hasn't even explained pro season to the GMs.

News Update

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Also asked Treliving about status of Gillies for the expansion draft. He said he's not sure, but doesn't expect it to be an issue. #Flames

I guess they do have the rest of summer to dot the i's and cross the t's, but I gather it will be hashed out after the draft and start of UFA. Although, there might be some GM's miffed if a player turned 20 year a couple weeks before playing in one playoff game after junior is counted as a pro season.

Is it like a test for the GMs where they have to calculate/guess if a certain player is exempt or not? Why can't the teams go ask the league, according to the rules they set out, the status of the players?
