Flames Haynes: Injury updates on Jokipakka, Wideman, Monahan, and Gillies

Looks like Flames can buyout Wideman if they want

http://www.flamesfrom80feet.ca/2016/...suffering.html

Quote:
The situation with 24-year-old blueliner Jyrki Jokipakka, acquired from Dallas in the Kris Russell trade, is the most significant. But he should be OK or close to it, by the time training camp begins in September.

"He got a procedure done at the end of the year on his hip and everything went well," said Treliving. "I'm not expecting there to be an impact on the season but we'll see where he is later in the summer and if that means maybe he starts training camp a little bit slower than the others."
Quote:
Also on the blueline, Treliving says veteran Dennis Wideman has fully recovered from his triceps injury that ended his season in mid-March. No surgery was needed, he only needed therapy.

Up front, Sean Monahan banged up his shoulder in the final game of the season in Minnesota. But it was only a minor injury.

"There was no surgical intervention or anything like that. If we had played some more games, he would have been questionable for those but he's back to full speed," said Treliving.

In net, goaltending prospect Jon Gillies has also fully recovered from hip surgery that ended his season in early November. After rehabbing in Calgary until the end of the regular season and then continuing his rehab back home, now he's in regular summer training mode.

"He'll come back prior to development camp, spend more time here, but he's right on track. The whole plan once we finally made the determination to have the surgery when we did is to have him ready, so he gets a full summer of training under his belt. so we're not rehabbing in the summer. Our plan is for him to be full-go for development camp."
Article also says Ramo might not be ready until late october.

There is no way Wideman should be a Flame next season. If trading him is not possible, meaning no team would be willing to take him for even 50% off his cap, then buy him out. I rather take the hit on the cap for 2017-18 then have Wideman on the roster next season.

I would think Wideman has a good chance of being traded in the next few weeks.

I'll take one more year of Wideman at full price this year with no cap hit at all next year if a trade can't be found.

So what team has a situation where they have too many players in one position? Specifically RW. We have too many dmen and need to jettison one for the team to be well rounded, to get rid of him we'll have to take on another similar contract.

To do that the team we trade with will have to be in the same situation where they are trying to open up a spot but are saddled by a contract that restricts that. Buying out sucks, Wideman cap hit in 2018 sucks hard and would rather just keep him but he's got to go. Take on a 6 million right winger that we can bury on the fourth line.

^ That's why I was initially intrigued by Wideman + for MAF.
2 birds and whatnot
Or 3 birds - qualifying Colborne may depend on Wideman being off the books?

If worse comes to worst, trade him to Vancouver as his fanboy Weisbrod would be all over that. Take Higgins back and buy him out at a substantial discount.

Best news is Gillies should be ready to finally show what he's got in pro hockey.

I think it's weird he even got mentioned. I know he'd like to come back but I don't see a place in the organization for him.

I see it more as just a FYI about Ramo, nothing more. He's still under care of the Flames and they may be letting other teams know about the status of Ramo before July 1st.
