NHL to formally start expansion process (only LV and QC submit applications)
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/n...nsion-process/
Quote:
Bettman is expected to leave the process open-ended: The NHL is ready to entertain bids, but won't commit to a specific number of teams. It will likely end up being two, but no guarantees will be made.

I love it. Vegas will be one for sure and the second team I'd put in Quebec City. When a team relocates they can go to Seattle. Ideally I'd have the two expansion teams be in Seattle and Quebec City to begin with but Vegas is a done deal it seems like with the arena and season ticket drive.

This is so dumb with Phoenix struggling...
Ensure all of your markets are at least semi-healthy prior to taking on expansion teams.

Vegas is probably a shoe-in unless they screw something up badly.
Seattle, Portland, Milwaukee, Houston, Kansas City... Any or all of them could bid. If they bid, any of them could be successful. All of them have at least one question mark, mostly about the existence of willing local ownership.
Then, of course, there is the possibility of Toronto2, Hamilton, or Quebec City.

why does this surprise anyone. 32 teams is the holy number for bracket playoff leagues.
1 in every 2 teams makes the playoffs, 1 in every 4 makes the second round 1 in every 8 makes the third and 1 in every 16 makes the final. it's perfectly balanced. No reason to think the NHL wouldn't pursue this.

I disagree with the watering down comments. There are more people playing worldwide. There is more talent than there ever has been. 80's hockey was brutal to watch compared to the skill of today. Messier would skate over the blue line and score with a wrist shot from the top of the circle everytime. That goal doesn't happen anymore because the players are better.
Yes, systems, goalie equipment etc have caused a downturn of scoring but it isn't due to lack of talent.
With the recent rise of US hockey and the annual increase of Draft picks coming from US, the game is getting bigger and skill is better.

Seattle is still missing a rink unfortunately.
I think something none of us saw coming will happen, and some big shot from Toronto will put up a bid the BOG can't refuse, and another club will need to move back to the west. Probably the BJs.

On paper it's an okay idea. My issue is that they're expanding while there are multiple teams failing to make money with ownership that isn't willing to spend money to be competitive.

Obviously, the lack of a suitable rink is one of the question marks around a Seattle team.
Keep in mind that Minnesota and Columbus didn't have rinks when they were awarded expansion teams. Their arenas both broke ground a year after the teams were announced.

If they get a team, would Seattle just play in the Thunderbirds' arena until they get a new one?
