Well it is entirely possible that a kid his age grew over the course of a season. I like this pick.

I don't mind this pick...its a 5th round pick. High risk, but he may pan out. Apparently he's highly skilled, just small. For a team that had Theo Fleury, we shouldn't be quick to disregard him based on his size. Still better than trading a 2nd round pick to dump Kotalik, now thats a waste of a pick.

Done! Future Flames top line, Bartschi-Gaudreau-Ferland

Ferland will destroy anyone who messes with those two.

Flames' Gretzky and Kurri!

Yes i'm trying to being optimistic on an otherwise gloomy day.

Well, if he's actually 5'9" then that's somewhat better.

There's many sub-5'9" former junior/college offensive wizards in Europe, and many available via free agency.

5'9'', absolutely.

Unfortunately everywhere I have read has him listed as 5'6" and hovering around 140lbs.

He's only 17, he may still grow a few inches.

Man I love the skill we drafted this year. These kids continue to work hard, put on some weight and build some strength, we might have a couple players in a few years.

In his fan 960 interview, he said he was 5'8, but didn't mention his weight.

Either way, he's got a lot of maturing to do, both physically and mentally.

He really sounds like a 14 year old kid, i'm not sure if he realizes how big an opportunity he has to be an nhl star.

It's easy for me to say this without an undestanding of his body type, cause everybody is different, but you wonder if he took this as a career more seriously, maybe he'd have more weight on his body right now like say Rocco Grimaldi.

Grimaldi is built like a tank and you can tell he's put a lot of hard work and effort into trying to overcome an obvious strength and size weakness. In the highlights, Gaudreau looks not only short, but thin. He really does look like Gretzky...........when he was 14 hahahaha...

Thanks, that makes me feel a bit better with the choice. Assuming this isn't one of those "5-8 with skates on".

People are always quick to write off the small guys but every now and then one of them comes through and proves everyone wrong. Fleury, Sullivan, St Louis and many, many others have come before. Maybe we can hope the same for this fella.

It's a long shot, of course, but I'd rather try to be positive than shout "BUST" from the rooftops minutes after the guy gets drafted.

I'm intrigued by this pick. I had my fingers crossed for rocco and this guy sounds like a slightly lesser version. This could turn out well for Calgary.

Yeah I think Grimaldi is a lot closer to the NHL than Gaudreau given his physical build and maturity.

But, skill wise, Gaudreau sounds like he may be Grimaldi's superior.

When you hear things like this from ex coaches:

"He's one of the most dynamic offensive talents that our country has seen in the past 10 years," Beach said. "His name is right up there with Patrick Kane, a smaller guy with an unbelievable skill set. He should definitely be drafted and will play in the NHL someday."

The guy finished 4th in scoring in the tough USHL as a 17 year old rookie. He had an amazing 23.4% shooting percentage over 60 games!?!?!

Hopefully he can build the necessary weight and muscle to take the physical rigours of the NHL.

Is that stuff for real?

I'm getting a real Martin St Louis vibe from this pick.

Let's hope, shall we?

Martin St. Louis was 23 years old before he was offered a professional contract.

This kid has a long ways to go.

Wow. If this kids lives up to his hype and grows 2 more inches by the time he's 20, it will be like hitting the lottery.

The problem could lie in the fact that if he puts on 30 pounds of muscle would it affect his game for better or worse?

It would make him 30 pounds heavier, and able to play in the NHL.

Someone send him a three year supply of protein shakes and t-bone steaks.
