Tell me about it. In previous years when I've created this thread, the Flames went on a huge losing streak almost immediately after. It was almost an annual jinx thread. The fact they beat Vancouver yesterday made me feel a lot better for posting the thread.

With the current standings, both Edmonton and Arizona are done, which isn't a shock but unless Dallas and Colorado go 8-2 or 9-1 in their next 10 games, they are probably done as well. It is too hard to make up the amount of points they are behind everyone else.

I modified the rankings based off max points which is what the magic #'s are calculated towards for the playoffs.

Thanks for this CG, I used to do this over at the old official flames forums and stopped once I came over here full time. It's amazing how time consuming it becomes - more or less because your imagining all the possibilities and hoping the most favorible one for the flames works out!

Plus, it's great to see this up and running again, it's been to long!

I've really missed the magic number thread. I think the last time the Flames were playing meaningful games in late February was 2011?

They calculate things a bit differently than in this thread, but that is valuable too.

I know this is probably "bad luck", but this team seems to say to hell with statistical probabilities (hence the 10 come from behind 3rd period wins).

If I was to gamble, my bet would be that the Preds, Blues, Ducks, Hawks, Kings, Canucks, and Wild will make the playoffs.

That leaves Winnipeg, San Jose and us for the other spot and I think it'll be a dog fight with the Flames and Jets for that spot.

Added another column, AKA countdown till elimination. 8th currently has 68 points.

It's the same thing as the magic # but in reverse, subtracting their max number by 69 (one better than 8th) and then halving it.

There is a difference between the magic # and the elimination number.

The magic # is based off of maximum theoretical points, which is why the standings I have listed are based on.

The elimination # is based off of actual points.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I haven't read this thread before. Where are the updates or is the table in the first page revised each time you say updated?

I revise it daily, although the top part gets edited first, usually right after the games. If you'd like I could just edit the first page, but include that day's edits in the updated post, so that there'll be a record of previous days as well (the square table with the #'s vs each other)
