Sources close to the situation have indicated Las Vegas is a done deal, the only thing to be determined being which owner will be entitled to proclaim that he brought the first major league sports franchise to Sin City.

Bill Daly talks about Vegas as an expansion city:

I don't even care if it's bound to fail or anything. As a Canadian, having NHL hockey in Vegas is awesome.

Any chance they start next season, or would it have to be 2016/17 at this point?

Not sure if there if Las Vegas has a temporary arena that is suitable, but the one being built by MGM and AEG won't be finished til 2016

I always thought Vegas would be a good idea. They have a large tourist base which can probably drive ticket sales. I would think that the stadium would have to be on or very near the strip though. Which resort will step to the plate and incorporate a rink? I wonder what sort of spectacle the Vegas organization puts together for intermissions.

I would certainly plan a trip around a Flames game.

My reply from the other thread:

Something that occurred to me just last week is that this is the longest the NHL has gone without a expansion since the league first expanded from 6 to 12 teams in 1967. The league had 21 teams from the 1979-80 season through the 1990-91 season (12 seasons). The NHL has been at 30 teams since 2000-01. Even if you exclude the lockout year, this will be the 14th season of a 30 team NHL.

The 2016-17 season will be the NHL's centennial, so expanding the league makes sense for that season too.

The writing was on the wall when they divided up the conferences with only 14 teams in the West. I can't see how Las Vegas deserves a team over Quebec City though.

Vegas seems like the perfect place to help give the league more exposure. Steady stream of people from all over the USA and world flowing through every week.

I hope Calgary leaves Wideman and Jones unprotected in the expansion draft.

As a flames fan living in bc it's probably going to be cheaper for me to go to Vegas to see the flames play rather than calgary. Granted that's as long as I stay away from the tables.

Sounds like Las Vegas and Seattle may be the 2 missing Western teams.

brings up the question if a player with a NMC (i.e. Wideman) can even be exposed to an expansion draft

I'm going to guess that.

NMC = NO
NTC = YES

I hope they expand into 2 markets at the same time so we can balance out the conferences.

I am super stoked about the idea of an expansion draft.

It's like an advanced stats geek's wet dream.

Honestly, posts like this only degrade the quality of this forum.
