I hated trying to watch videos on TSN.ca and getting a message that I can't watch the video because I don't have cable with Rogers. Yeah, but I had Rogers internet and I am trying to watch the video on the internet... such #######s that way.

I now went to Teksavvy.

I haven't had cable in 3.5 years. I highly recommend cutting the cord.

How is Teksavvy? consistent signal? good customer service? What are you paying and what do you get? My shaw has been down to less than 1 mbps in the evenings but over 52 at noon.

Cutting the cord is AWESOME. Like everybody else, I can't tell you the last time I wished I had it. I've even noticed with CBC feeds I do still get coaches corner... just nothing before or after the broadcast.

One common point is that many use tv as background noise. I have Plex on my computer that holds all my downloaded tv and movies. Using the Plex app on my Roku (or if you have a new Apple TV), I can set up playlists of content to play automatically. For Halloween I queued up all the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror and left them on in the background. For Christmas I have a list of 20 movies/episodes that I'll just throw on when I'm cooking or running around the house.

They piggy back off of Rogers, so the speed and reliability is the same. From what I understand, they buy the bandwidth in bulk and then re-sell it to their customers.

Customer service has been great so far. I pay $60/month for 400 gigs and 55mbs.

I don't think Telus Optik TV is heavily compressed any more. I noticed a huge improvement in picture quality switching from Shaw.

I will move to Teksavvy soon because I like their no cap plan. Speed doesn't matter much to me once it is over 30mbps.

Was it Telus TV or the newer Telus Optik TV? I heard the original was terrible.

Thanks. Do you ever notice it lagging below the 55? and if so, how much.

I hate not getting what I am paying for but understand congestion happens. However, less than 1mbps is bull####.

Cancelled back in summer. Shaw has never turned off my ability to log into various apps through Shaw Go.

So, we get 6 channels OTA, Netflix (etc), and live streaming of Sportnet, TSN, History - I can Airplay from my phone through my Apple TV to my TV.

Really havent missed it much, except for when the streams on the apps aren't working like they should. Oh, and "Sportsnet Flames" isn't available for streaming on the app.

I found we had often been watching shows streaming on an ipad anyway, so why pay that extra money?

For those who have cut the cord, who do you go thru for just internet (Shaw, Telus, other?)? What level of internet did you get? Approximate price to expect?
[Just wondering if any lessons learned for the the rest of us]

Eastern Canada, so not sure if available in the west.
Primus internet, delivered on Bell backbone.
50MB down, 10MB up. Unlimited usage, no throttling - and those speeds are close in real world.
That combined with home phone service (for alarm) is $63/month plus tax.
This was a Primus deal offered to Costco members. I have seen reps in store recently, so it probably still exists, though I am not sure.
We have the fortunate luxury of 24 OTA HD channels (close to US border), so that combined with streaming gives us all the TV we need/want and more.

I cut most of my cable this fall. Kept only the basic and sports package so I could watch hockey. I was actually going to cut all my cable completely and get Gamecentre, but after much research I didn't think it would fit my style of viewing (I like to PVR games an hour in and just skip all commercials. GC would have complicated that process). I upgraded my Telus internet to the 50mbps package. They gave me a promo for 6 months.

So now my entire Telus package is

-Basic cable
-Sports package
-50mbps/450GB

All for $68/month. Pretty good deal. I just stream all my TV shows. Once my promo expires, I'm going to ask them to put me on another. If they say no, I'll just wait a day and ask another rep. All I did was use the chat feature on Telus website and ask for the promo and they let me go on it. I actually wanted to go under the 100mbps plan, but I was told my neighborhood didn't have the optic cables, only the 50.

I'm very glad I did this. I went from paying ~$120/month for 25mbps cable and a couple TV packages, to what I have now. There really is no need for cable anymore other then watching sports live. Everything can be streamed on way or another.

For the big downloaders, you can get unlimited data for an extra $15/month. Depends how much you stream (I live alone so 450GB is plenty) but for a large family that streams a lot, the $15 extra might be a good option.

I'm with Reaper. Telus has really stepped up their game in terms of noticable compression. I know watching the 2012 World Junior's at a friends was terrible, then last year during the playoffs it was just fine.

Having said that- getting CBC OTA is the best as OTA is not compressed at all.

Myself, I could never cut the cord. When we moved we had a week of Shaw basic, and it almost ended in a divorce.
