This was an all or nothing toss by SNL they loaded up on guest stars and had the only host who could pretty much carry the episode with Martin Short who is brilliant and fun and then you add a former beatle as a musical guest.
Its the rare episode that delivered, and got over the repetitive scripts and bad writing that has killed this show for the longest time.
I cringed when Kristen Wig showed up, she is just not funny at all.

Completely serious, she's just more annoying then funny. She was a train wreck in Bridesmaids.
She got boring in SNL.

Best show of the season?
'SNL' Scorecard: Samuel L. Jackson Calls 'Bull####' On Martin Short's Show
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-r...b_2311527.html
"Saturday Night Live" had the difficult task of airing one day after one of the worst mass shootings in the history of the United States -- a shooting that occurred a mere 75 miles from 30 Rockefeller Plaza. It was never specifically mentioned, but it presided over the night after a haunting (considering the circumstances) children's choir rendition of "Silent Night" as the cold open. Martin Short, after a 16-year hiatus -- in what is surprisingly only his second time as sole host (not counting the time he co-hosted with Chevy Chase and Steve Martin) -- sank a ton of effort into his duties and almost made this feel like the joyous holiday show that it should have been. Almost. Also: Samuel L. Jackson cussed.
Average Score for this Show: 6.28
· Martin Short 6.28
· Christina Applegate 6.13
· Seth MacFarlane 5.93
· Louis C.K. 5.92
· Anne Hathaway 5.87
· Bruno Mars 5.81
· Joseph Gordon-Levitt 5.51
· Jamie Foxx 5.43
· Jeremy Renner 5.39
· Daniel Craig 5.35

She was okay, but overall I thought the show was weak. The opening was good, but the then used all the good news stories of the week. The last sketch was okay, but everything else in between was lacking.

The only thing I laughed at was the stupid dog sketch when the door bell rang...and only because I have two dogs of my own.
They need to start using Kate McKinnon more. She clearly has talent and could be the biggest star on this show.

Agreed, I've been thinking this lately too. She kind of reminds me of Kristin Wiig actually.
...and agreed CC, Wiig started to get on my nerves the last season or 2, because after her popularity blew up she seemed to do nothing but loud, over the top type characters, when IMO she's just as funny doing subtle roles (similar to what happened to Jay Onrait). But before that she was my favourite of the cast.

This week I thought the material was better than average, but I had never heard of the host and musical guest before. SNL seemed to be making fun of the host, by matching his lame band against other lame bands in a rumble sketch.
'SNL' Scorecard: Adam Levine's Subpar Audition
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-r...b_2561689.html
So, here's what we learned last night: Adam Levine is not a particularly good "SNL" host. Now, Levine certainly didn't phone it in -- like we've seen other hosts do this season -- but, like many a musical guest-turned-host before him, this just really didn't work out. At least he gave a nice effort though.
Reading the cue cards is a huge part of "SNL" and it always has been. The hosts and cast are told to read the cue cards because of the constant changes to the script, even right before the show goes on live. Adam Levine's performance as host marks the first time that the cue card reading actually bothered me. And I can't put my finger on it, but the show has really lost something since the election ended. Sure, the holiday fueled Martin Short show was good, but there's just an edge that's been missing for a few weeks and it certainly didn't return last night. Though, this wasn't by any means a bad show -- like last week's mess -- it just wasn't a particularly great one either. Here is your "SNL" Scorecard ...
Average Score for this Show: 5.71
· Martin Short 6.28
· Christina Applegate 6.13
· Seth MacFarlane 5.93
· Louis C.K. 5.92
· Anne Hathaway 5.87
· Bruno Mars 5.81
· Adam Levine 5.71
· Joseph Gordon-Levitt 5.51
· Jamie Foxx 5.43
· Jeremy Renner 5.39
· Jennifer Lawrence 5.38
· Daniel Craig 5.35

Pretty disappointed by Lonely Island's new video.
Was pumped for Samberg to make a return and the inevitable promo for a new Lonely Island song, but this one fell flat to me.
Thought Levine was fine, but far from good.
Where's Fred Armisen?

Portlandia.
Another completely mediocre comedy, where just being weird and hipster is supposed to be super hilarious.

Portlandia is shot when SNL is out of season. And it is the funniest show on TV. Wildly creative.

I like that you completely missed the point of Portlandia.
The scene with Kamail Nanjiani as the cell phone salesman going through the various phones and plans should be held up as one of the most import sketch pieces of our generation.

The scene where the couple breaks-up and brings their friends into a gym - they draft which friends they are each going to keep. Brilliant and so funny.

Yeah it gave a couple laughs but certainly wasn't great. But they get a pass, pretty much everything else is gold.
