I don't think he's a great coach, but they totally overachieved last season.

Yeah he’s a scapegoat for unrealistic expectations this year. Look at the makeup of that team.

Hakstol isn't the reason the Kraken sucked. They overachieved big time last year. Not that Dave is a top coach either but still.
Wonder if Gallant gets a chance here

they should have fired whoever came up with that "release the Kracken" promo.

It was a strange hiring to begin with.
Francis should be the one to go as well, he didn't draft a very good team to begin with.

He didn't, but I think teams learned quickly from the "You can have Marchessault for free if you trade us a 4th rounder for Reilly Smith" days.

Or you can have Theodore instead of Josh Manson.

Yeah it was kind of an underwhelming hire as the organization's first head coach. I can't say he was bad because they overachieved last season but the roster still needs a lot of work so I don't know if the locker room was maybe getting tired of the message or if someone had to pay the price for failing to meet raised expectations.

Didn't they just extend him also?

Yup.
2 years last July, the extension didn't kick in yet much like the Sutter extension.
Makes you wonder if the same situation happened after exit interviews like it did here.

Keefe also about the get canned (I would imagine) before his extension kicks in. Feels like contract extensions are the new Jack Adams when it comes to the coaching kiss of death.
As for being Sutteresque with his players, I don't see it. Maybe, but I've never heard any rumors or stories of Hakstol being a jerk.

I see no reason to fire him otherwise and pay him 2 years to go away.
It's not like this is a contender or anything that had a bad year.
Keefe was a Shanahan and Dubas guy. I am not sure Shanny will allow his guy to be fired just yet.

Problem is that the average head coach tenure is <3 years so once a head coach gets extended, the odds are high that he never coaches out the deal. Really as a GM you are probably best to carry any head coach out to his lame duck season and extend during the season if things are still heading in the right direction. Extending a year or two early seems to be a waste of ownership money in a lot of cases.

Some GMs learned nothing and were still willing to give them Mark Giordano for nothing....

The last 2 firings are head scratchers.
What exactly are San Jose and Seattle looking to accomplish here? You're not good teams, why waste money.

We have seen it here a few times with Hartley and Sutter that player exit interviews can influence decisions on head coaches. Could be the players were not fans of the coaches. Or it could simply be a matter of owners wanting change after a bad season.
