Default Shadowban?

I know some other forums, Reddit posts up as the major one, have the Shadowban options for punted posters. It effectively lets the banned poster keep posting and to them everything is hunky dory but to everyone else the guy would be gone. Posts wouldn't show up etc etc.

Is this something that could be implemented on Calgarypuck, is the forum software even capable of it?

Remember, I'm an ideas man.

What is the point?

It allows the "banned" poster to continue posting without him effectively knowing he's banned. I'll let you figure out the benefits. Tend to doubt your sincerity whenever you make these totally glib "why" replies.

Yes I understand that it allows the "banned" poster to continue posting (you explained that in your OP).

I can't figure our the benefits. You clearly believe there are some and I would like to hear what you believe they are.

I don't see the point to be honest.

Regarding you perception of the glibness of my comment, there is none. It is a sincere question.

Whenever you post the why reply it makes me feel like I'm explaining something to a child.

It allows a disruptive poster to continue posting without making any actual disruptions. Judging by the amount of "Lifetime Suspensions" we've seen over the past week, and how obvious it was some of those were returning posters this would allow a guy like Read Only (moon) to continue posting. They'd be blissfully unaware no one is being affected by their annoying posts.

Eventually they might get onto it, but not right away. Look at the situation on the board this week with DOOM, it's a tricky situation. He really wasn't doing anything against the rules, posting an opinion ad nauseam ins't an infraction but the way he was doing it was obviously overly disruptive to the board. A shadowban would let the moderators ban him for a month, whatever, and allow him to continue posting but give the board a cool down from his a-hole behaviour.

I've seen it used well on other boards.

I don't see the advantage. If the individual's actions are such that they warrent more than a suspension, just ban them.

Good, now we can move on and allow others to add to the thread.

If you want to debate about me personally, PM me, don't bring the thread off track this quickly.

I think what you are describing is or was called Tachy Goes To Coventry - or Global Ignore. I believe there's also something called Troll Hack. With Troll Hack they would see periods of slowness, non responsiveness, 404 pages, posts won't go through, etc. The site sort of works, sometimes, but mostly it's like they're stuck in a loop of just not quite staying online long enough to actually do anything. It's been a while since I saw the inside of a vB admin panel though so who knows what subsequent upgrades have kept or dumped.

ETA: anyone can have a look at the inside of a vBulletin admin panel at any time. vBulletin allows for trial accounts where you can sign up for 72 hours to have a poke around their system to see if you want to use vBulletin or not. You can see anything usable for troll control, member features, etc.

There has been lots of lifetime suspensions recently?

What threads and which posters?

Let's just say the losing streak affected more than the team on the ice.

I see the point is basically for the forum to pull the "fade away" on a banned user, and the assumption is that they get bored, move on. Sounds like forcing a global ignore list onto all of the users in good standing, where the banned user is simply put onto everybody's ignore list. Or only let banned users can see each other's posts.

But... it seems like this would fall apart if they're PM'ing and not getting responses, or they browse the forum as a guest and don't see their posts anywhere? I don't always log in when I am reading the forums, so how would it differentiate between logged-in me, and not logged-in me from another computer? Calgarypuck would have to be set up to not disallow guests from reading the forums.
