would have been funny if the keeper had stayed still again for Blind's penalty.

Rumour mill saying Mbappe to Madrid for £143.5m plus £17.5m in add ons, and that he'll get a farewell season at Monaco with a loan back for next year. Utterly insane money obviously, but when factoring age and market, not too bad.

I'm thrilled at getting Mbappe.

The price is ridiculous. Paying probably 50 million euro more than expected because of PSG.

edit: aaaaaaand Monaco denies the report. It's Marca, so I guess this is expected.

You have zero idea on knowing if it's not too bad at this moment in time.

It's money spent based on potential upside based on what? One good season.

In a few years time when he realizes, or not this potential we can determine the value for money. It's a high risk high reward situation that just as easily could go south if he doesn't realize his potential.

The money that gets thrown around on transfers by big clubs is obscene. 99% of the clubs in Europe couldn't hope to spend 1% of what the big guys spend.

For me its interesting, I love following Hockey and the NHL, I think the Salary Cap in the NHL is one of the most amazing constructs in all of Professional Sports and that it really should have more emulators in other sports, but I also understand why not.

The fact is that Soccer is different. In the NHL we're all after the Cup, but in soccer just not being dead last is like winning a trophy, top 4 in the EPL can be better than winning it. Success in soccer is a constantly fluid, nebulous concept.

Big teams will spend big money.

Interventionist financial policy, vs full reign free market capitalism.

Ironic, that the former, is utilized in American pro sports, including & especially soccer, with the rest of the world utilizing the latter.

the opposite study would be what would happen if the NHL had promotion/relegation?

That said i believe the soccer system beloved worldwide is a failure... other than the English pyramid, all other 2nd divisions are garbage.

Edmonton would have mirrored Leeds United.

In fairness, that system tends to assume a level playing field which, in soccer, is not true.

Its like old-school NHL where the big teams had more money and just bought better players that nobody else could match or afford.

Soccer loves the un-level terms. Middle Eastern Oil sheikhs dropping untold millions on players and winning trophies with teams that hemorrhage cash, but they dont care.

They're treated like toys, trophies and trinkets rather than businesses.

A group on one side of the world trying to run a team like a business making money with methodical planning cant compete with a lunatic billionaire on the other side of the world who has nobody to answer to in terms of his spending.

I've thought about that a lot, and despite the fact that the Edmonton Oilers should be playing in whatever league is below the CHL, the talent gap in hockey is much wider than it is in soccer.

i think it's pretty wide in soccer too.. again the English league is the one successful pyramid. Nobody is watching Bundesliga 2

How are you judging success? Neither Bundesliga 2, La Liga 2 nor the Superettan are as premier as their top flights or the major leagues in North America but they* are properly professional and play a major role in terms of development and culture. The NHL is the only league that comes close to covering the country with proper league teams and hockey is the only major North American sport at which we excel. Coincidence?

*And the other leagues in the pyramid.

there's no way he'll sign a new contract without a somewhat reasonable buyout clause.

In this day and age of low oil prices, commodity fluctuations and the Neymar debacle, is there such a thing anymore?

While its true that nothing will change, there are a number of steps that could/should probably be taken. Changing the loan system would be good so that teams can't stockpile players basically just to spite other clubs. I get that the loan system works for young players needing experience, but some teams are just over the top with it. Obviously making it so that the same owners can't have more than one team would be a step in the right direction because then you have what is essentially a farm system for those ultra-rich clubs.

I don't have much in the way of answers, but there are problems brewing I think.
