This is a Bennett injury related question.
When he comes back and cleared to play does he go back to the OHL or AHL?

Well that's where the most comes in. Edmonton is really the only team I've ever seen where the players totally bought into the tank.
Carolina got injured, Buffalo is trying. Even the Oilers youngsters tanked ... but that's rare.

So if it wasn't as bad as what they thought, what's the timeline?
4 months from date of surgery? He's skating right now isn't he?

I think technically, because they didn't send him down, he could play a conditioning stint in the AHL.

And then come up to the big team?
If they go that route, does that tie him into the AHL/NHL all season, or could he sitll get sent to the OHL?

As far as I know they could still send him down whenever they want. The 9 games thing still applies in terms of contract purposes. Honestly though I would prefer he get the conditioning stint (or not really, it doesn't really matter) and then go directly to the OHL. He needs time and there's no rush.

Agreed, I would rather he test his body out down with kids than up with men.
There is no rush, treat him properly and he will come into camp strong next year.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw him play in the NHL this year. My reasoning being that (unless I'm mistaken?) Hartley said that he essentially made the team out of camp? I personally have no idea what would be best for his development or if he would be more at risk of re-injuring his shoulder in the NHL or the OHL or the AHL. I was under the impression that he has a surgically repaired shoulder and that the risk of re-injury is very very low. But I could be wrong. I'd imagine he'll be out of shape though, the obvious thing to do would be to send him back to junior but again I wouldn't be surprised if he was in Flames silks.

I love to see Sam Bennett in Flames uniform sooner than later BUT I think it would be wise to have him play in the OHL the duration of the season. I just want him to healed fully 100% and in the OHL he can conditioned himself. Then next season he can fight for the roster spot with the Calgary Flames and I am sure he'll get a spot with the team.

I would like to see a conditioning stint in the AHL, I he struggles then it is straight back to the CHL for him. If he excels and is the best player for the baby flames then why not give him a chance.

Tall skinny guy definitely should wait until next year to play for the Flames. Let him play a bunch of minutes in the AHL, workout with a professional trainer all summer then come back with a strong shoulder ready to go.
He's too eager to put his body in danger and needs muscle to support that play style of driving the net with reckless abandon.

The AHL is the same size as the NHL with dirtier players

Id like him in the CHL for the rest of the year. Meaningful games, lots of minutes, a regular lineup not changing all the time. There's plenty of time for him to move up.

I hate hate hate qualifiers like this. It's so silly in pro sports to say "Well, if not for this then they'd be that".
You know which other games the Flames would have lost this season if not for the efforts of a young player? Almost all of them.
But it's a silly qualifier because it's bred out of your bias towards your "this team is terrible and has no chance at the playoffs" narrative that you keep harping on.
The positive fans could turn that around on you and find good young players that lifted their team past the Flames during our losing streak and say "Well, if not for player X the Flames would have won 4 games during the losing streak and would be comfortably in the playoffs."
