On Feb 27, 2004, Hartley scratched Ilya Kovalchuk.
They beat the Devils that day. Kovalchuk won the Richard that year.

I agree it sucks that people paying hard earned money don't get to see some of our best players tonight. Maybe Johnny, Mony and Bouma should reimburse all of them cause honestly, it's their fault and only their faults.

There has to be some accountability and it's not a bad idea to do it at this point in the season given we're pretty much out of it.

No it isnt. Its really easy. Its actually easier than normal.

This is a very standard punishment.

If anything its HF showcasing its own ignorance. Yeah, the Flames are suspending players against Toronto in order to tank.

If it's something the Oilers wouldn't do, it's a good move from my point of view.

Well if the Leafs are going to get rid of their best player, we should get rid of ours for the game too

Fines mean nothing to these guys.

I don't doubt this is a policy issue that's spelled out at the beginning of the season. They can't and shouldn't back off because of who the player is.

I support the decision, assume it's not going to recur, and think it's good for the team long term.

Love it, Derek Wills nailed it on the head and made a perfect comparison.

Ovechkin screwed up, got scratched a game for being late, holding ALL players acountable is the right thing. I agree with this.

Bennett too. And he will get more ice time. Maybe even a shot at centre?

Just stop it, you're not funny or hip or cool for trying to be so negative all the time, just bloody annoying.

If you are aren't prepared to go full measured with punishments, might as well not punish them at all.

Good on Hartley for doing this now. I don't know if this was something that was building up or not - seems like a whole lot of speculation on that front, and I won't bother to comment on it. However, seems that those three broke a rule - they were late for practice. What are the consequences in the "Flames' Code of Conduct" for being late to a team practice? The player(s) must sit out that game.

Good on Hartley for not making an exception. You start making exceptions, and before long your team falls apart.

If Playfair, Keenan or even Brent Sutter didn't make exceptions and just forced everyone to play the team rules (even if it was 'play within the system' and friggin' backcheck!), perhaps the they would all be head coaches currently in the NHL.

In today's day and age in the NHL, coaches do not stand a chance when they have an issue with a star player. Easier to hire a new coach than find a new star player. Hopefully Hartley has nipped this in the bud. Without a doubt, the entire team now knows there is nothing that they can get away with.

Sucks if you are a fan attending tonight's game if you were really looking forward to seeing Gaudreau and Monahan, but you will thank Hartley in a few years when this team still plays as a team and hasn't had to trade your favorite star players because they became distractions.

And that's where I'm coming from. Why does it have to be something that punishes the fan? They seriously can't be more creative then this? They have to pick the easiest option?

Make Gaudreau stay after the game and clean up the stands. That would be an impressive punishment.
