How are tiles with live updates different than update badges on iOS? Serious question.

They are not that different really. I think that it is a little bit more visually appealing and a little bit more customizable than the iOS homescreen. They are way closer to iOS badges than they are to widgets for sure.

Yeah I've never seen a widget on a phone... I mean OK the iphone has little update circles... and the calendar has the correct day... but aside from that?

One of Android's top selling points in my opinion is widgets, and they can look like anything from iOS badges to OSX widgets to whatever people can design. You could quite easily make a widget that would show up exactly like the tile system on WP7. Its a way of presenting live information without having to touch anything or open an app. Trust me, its not new on phones. It would appear new to someone that's never seen an Android phone, I suppose.

My phone has widgets and I freaking love it. The only problem is that it is (currently) the only phone using this particular OS.
