I like the trade, but, I kinda hate loosing Broissot so early- the guy is a winner you can tell. Ah well, you got to give something to get something I guess- I just hope this guy doesn't come back to haunt us down the road.

So I checked. In the last 2 years there have been about 500 posts with the word Smid in it. That includes a bunch today. I don't know what portion of those posts were negative or positive.

Today alone we've had 1,248 different people on the site.

So even if you assume all 500 posts about Ladisav Smid were negative and that there are only 1,248 different CP posters (that number is probably 20 times) then no - MOST of CP has not always said Smid was terrible.

Doesn't seem to make sense for either team at the moment, unless Edmonton is gearing up to sign Bryz... I don't get this trade.

Flames-Oilers trade, and visiting HF in the same hour?

LB and Roy are a wash.
Smid is less terrible than Butler/SOB.
Scor-ak was kind of an odd man out at C.

As dirty as it feels, I like it.

Could this have anything to do with Smid's comments to reporters last week?

Not gonna bother reading this thread as it will likely be a bunch of rambling of how stupid Feaster is and how great those two prospects are, so here's my two cents and then I'm done:

Smid is a very solid defensive defenseman. Quite frankly the only one worth keeping on the back end in Edmonton going forward. He's big and uses his size well, moves pretty well, and kills penalties well (last time I saw him).

Roy is a mystery prospect for me, and I've never been very high on him, but we had so many good prospects ahead of Brossoit (Berra, Ramo?, Gillies, Ortio), so I knew we were going to move one of those goalies at some point. Brossoit might be good, but he's battled inconsistency which is not good for a goalie. Roy is simply a different inconsistent prospect that might not be as good as Brossoit, but is still a decent depth prospect.

Horak is what he is, a quality bottom line/fill-in center/winger. He's never really taken off offensively and while he works hard and is smart, he isn't much of a game changer. I wish him the best, but he doesn't have quite enough to be a regular NHLer IMO.

We got the best player in the deal. Smid is still 27, so he could be a leader for a young defense group and a stop gap for guys like Wotherspoon, Sieloff, and Ramage who had their development set back or stall in Abbotsford. We desperately needed some help on the back end and Smid fits exactly what we needed, plus is under contract for 3 more years.

We got better in the short term and long term with this deal IMO. Pretty happy all around.

Russel butler is a decent bottom pair. If Smid is a legitimate 4 defensemen on a competitive team then this was a steal. Its tough to guage him as a player when that team has so bad for so long.

So if the plan was to dump Smid and sign Bryz... then what after? They are short an NHL-caliber d-man now, and upgrade in net...

Just yesterday I was asking what Jay Feaster was doing regarding player moves and look at what happens today.

Brossoit played for the Oil Kings so the Oilers probably know him from there. Horak has been up and down here for a couple seasons and couldn't break through so good luck to him.

Welcome Ladislav Smid.

You really don't want to be developing goalies behind a poor defense. Even with all hands on deck the Flames are weak in that area. Smid will help in that regard. So worth doing.
