Treliving on 960
November 26, 2015
http://pmd.fan960.com/audio_on_deman...-Interview.mp3

Why waive Ortio now:
  • Hiller is back and ready to play. Has gone through a week of practice and ramping it up
  • The move is designed to get Ortio playing. Hopefully get some ryhthm in his game and go from there.
  • Orts will go down and getting playing time.
  • felt pretty confident that Ortio would clear waivers
  • not a slight against Joni
  • looking across the league looked at who needed a goaltender - always a chance
  • thinks Ortio is a good young goaltender with lots of upside
  • felt there was a good chance he was going to get through and that's what we wanted

on how decision is made to trust Ramo with 12 consecutive starts:
  • we (management and coaches) talk about all decisions
  • ultimately end of day it is Bob's call to put the line up card and put the players on the ice that give the best chance of success
  • while they discuss all decisions on lineups/players coach makes the final call
  • we have been looking to stabilize the goaltending position
  • coaches decided - and Brad supported it - to give Karri a run of games to get into a groove, consistency
  • it was Bob's final decision and he supports it

goalie situation in Stockton:
  • jon Gillies - decision will be coming soon in the next day or so on how to handle injury
  • Kevin Poulin - dislocated knee cap that required surgery - will be out for several weeks (not sure of the exact timing)
  • injuries also create a need for Joni in Stockton too

on why Granlund was called up:
  • looked at positional need in Calgary, then looked at performance in Stockton
  • Granlund had a great training camp
  • there were a number of players in the discussion depending on what we were looking for
  • coaches up here were talking about a centerman
  • probably been the most consistent player up front there through this part of the season
  • Markus is hoping this is his last callup - he has really become a top tier AHL player
  • challenge for Markus is bringing that game to the NHL
  • he has to come in here and grab it
  • will play tommorrow night
  • went down to Stockton with an excellent attitude, improved his game and done a good job thus far

on what Granlund has to do to become a fulltime NHLer:
  • gave him a good outline of the specific areas he needs to focus on and he has done that
  • obviously faceoffs was one area
  • what makes a player click and stick to the NHL is having an impact on the game - which Markus can do in several different ways.
  • Markus is an really intelligent player - have grown to appreciate his smarts and hockey iq
  • responsible player defensively
  • Markus can help us on the PK and he has been good in Stockton on the PP
  • he brings a ballanced skillset - a player that the coach can trust in his own end but also a guy who can make a play with the puck on his stick
  • a lot of it is confidence - wants Granlund to play in the NHL with the same confidence he has shown in the AHL
  • he is in a good place mentally - wants to be here fulltime and will be given the opportunity to do so

rationale on Smid's conditioning stint:
  • rationale is simply he hasn't played a lot
  • we have been looking at this for a while now
  • players on a conditioning stint still take up a roster spot so they had to balance that with the Flames schedule
  • we had this part of the schedule circled for a while where the Flames were close by and Smid can get some playing time
  • plan is to see how it goes and get him up to speed
  • players have to agree to conditioning stints and Laddy was open to that
  • will go day by day
was there a conversation about Ortio or Hiller going on a conditioning stint before putting Ortio on waivers:
  • yes
  • "We talked about that more so with Orts earlier in the year. Just at that particular time both from the roster standpoint and the player has to be on board as well - we weren't able to do that"
  • No question that was something that was looked at and discussed but never happened.
  • He is able to get the games now that he has been assigned.

on carrying only 6 D and being close proximity to Stockton:
  • they are at 23 man roster right now with Smid on conditioning stint and having recalled Granlund.
  • well aware about roster and will see how it plays out over the next few days

on whether Hudler will play tomorrow:
  • Hudler practiced today
  • Jiri will play tomorrow night
  • Jiri got whacked pretty good with the Flu
  • decision was made to hold him out of Anaheim
  • looked like he had a lot of energy today

how difficult is it to be patient when team is struggling like it is:
  • have to have patience in this business
  • players develop differently and on different time lines
  • don't mistake patience for happiness for where this team is at
  • none of us are happy with the team so far
  • job each day is to find ways to make the team better
  • that is internally trying to get players to perform to the level they are capable of
  • also from a team aspect getting the team to play on a more consistent basis
  • making deals just to make deals makes no sense
  • not a lot of joy right now with how the team is performing

With Granlund up and Smid getting ready to play and Ortio making it down to the AHL...

trade?

Lots of nothing moves going on internally right now.

Good to see the GM still has confidence in a young goaltender then some of you on here.

still kind of ticked off that the quote from Treliving implies Ortio would not consent to a conditioning stint

Poor wording on Brad's part. It is not what was meant to be implied.

I can't help but wonder how different this season would be if BT secured one of the goalies he was said to be targeting in the offseason... it's really too bad we're looking at 3 very much average or less options for this season. Have to pray Hiller finds some fortitude here...

I got the same impression as sureloss, that Ortio did indeed not consent to a conditioning stint.

I wonder what else he could have meant by that line?

I guess it would depend on how he was asked. If Ortio felt like he wasn't going to have any rust with time off than maybe that's why he declined. Or maybe Ortio felt he was taking more in by learning from Sigalet and watching Hiller and Ramo than he would from in the AHL.

To the team it probably doesn't mean too much whether he went for a conditioning stint or not. He still counts against the pro roster so it's not like it would have cleared a roster space for anyone. Although I'm not sure about the cap hit and whether they would still have to pay his pro salary in the AHL.

He could have meant "that time" was week 1 of the season or something, where Ortio was still hoping to get a chance to play regularily a regular role than the 3rd stringer role he ended up playing.

...need a centre? Maybe take Bennett away from the offensive poison of Mikael Backlund, and put him together with Gaudreau and Frolik.

Backlund - Monahan - Jones
Gaudreau - Bennett - Frolik
Colborne - Stajan - Bollig/Raymond/Jooris
Hudler - Granlund - Ferland

...but I echo Da_Chief, this season is a disaster and has been since day 1.

I believe Backlund to be a very poor player in the offensive zone.

One silver lining here: I doubt we EVER see a 3 goalie system again. Next time Ortio comes up he will have an opportunity to play.

Barring an injury or trade to Ramo or Hiller, I wouldn't be surprised if Ortio has played his last game as a Flame. Especially if he did in fact refuse a conditioning stint.

If they're calling up Granlund, they better put him is position to succeed. Stop wasting offensive talent with plugs.

Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Bennett-Granlund-Frolik
Colborne-Stajan-Jones
Hudler-Backlund-Jooris (this line shouldn't get more then 10 minutes)

But seeing how Hartley has developed our young guys so far I expect to see Granlund between Bollig and Jooris on the 4th line playing 7 minutes tomorrow.

He is on a one way this year. The team gave him a two year deal, first year two way. second year one way. That is his wage.

Conspiracy theory:
In terms of protecting an asset, consider that if you sit Ortio for 11 games, then plan to demote, it makes sense to minimize the asset value or maximize the risk to the acquiring party. How would a team picking him up on waivers have confidence in him if optically Calgary appears to have lost it? Especially when they would be committed to keeping him up for the year. Short term asset devaluation. Fiendishly brilliant.

Ortio contributed mightily to that asset devaluation with the numbers he put up too.

As for Granlund, I'm hoping for magic. Same as all season.
